We may be allowed our sever- al opinions as to the advisability of capital punishment jander .any'' circumstances, (or according to circumstances), but so long as we uphold the law of "A life for a life" by keeping it upon our statute books, let us at least be consistent. and uphold our judges and chief executive for their stand, for the law, in the face of threats against their own lives, and the lives of those nearest and dearest to them. This case will bring to the minds of our older readers the famous anarchist case in Chicago years ago. At the time of the trial of several anarchists for murder, Governor Altgeld of Illinois was besieged with threats fron the anarchists of the entire en-tire country, but being convinced convinc-ed of the justice of the charges against the prisoners, he steadfastly stead-fastly refused to interfere in their behalf, and they were duly executed. And to the best of our knowledge, the Governor was allowed to live out his days in peace, and the nation had only praise for the executive who was not to be intimidated or coerced. With the passing of Joseph Hillstrom, closes one of the most interesting chapters of Utah History. It is the opinTon of most residents res-idents of the state that while his guilt was not proven by eye witnesses, wit-nesses, he had a fair and impartial impar-tial trial, and that his sentence was deserved, according to the law of the state. It is also the opinion of Utah people, that while deference is due to the wishes of the highest high-est executive of tne nation, in this case it was wholly prcper for the Governor to carry out the sentence as pronounced by |
