Show Deer Season Draws To Close Friday The annual deer hunt in Utah came to an end Tuesday night, for the slate as a whole, but Oak City, Fillmore and Kanosh will remain open until Friday night for both bucks and does. Full particulars on these hunting areas may be had from the proclamation which outlines the boundaries. Roughly the area south of the Sevier river in the Canyon Range between highways 91 and 6 is open; also the area south of Scipio pass bounded on the west by highway high-way 91 and on the east by the Scipio-Aurora road and continuing down that range of mountains below be-low Beaver, remains open for the extended season which closes on Friday night. !. The hunting has been poor this I year with many hunters still with-' with-' out their buck, and those who have gotten their bucks have mostly shot small ones. The largest larg-est deer we have heard of was I killed by Harold (Boots) Done, and weighed 250 dressed. I Done's buck had a handsome spread of horns, 7 points to a side. Lee Gronnine got one, 11 points on one side andl2 on the other, that would dress out around 230 pounds. And one was reported from Topaz, about that weight, with 4 points. Vern Justesen got a big one, 262 pounds before it was dressed, and he also caught the biggest cold in Millard county, and had to tell his story in a whisper. He and Arch Maxfield, Blair Maxfield, and Piatt Taylor hunted around Salina, scaling scal-ing the highest peaks, finally reaching an elevation of 11,522 feet, when they came down to defrost. de-frost. Sportsmen are still apprehensive about the shooting of does, and brame the large kill of does each year to the fast diminishing deer herds. |
