Show Sgt. Robert M. Waters Decorated with Air Medal December 27, 1943. Dear Mrs. Waters: Recently your son, Technical Sergeant Robert M. Waters, was decorated with the Air Medal. It was an award made in recognition of courageous service to his combat com-bat organization, his fellow American Ameri-can airmen, his country, his home and to you. He was cited for meritorious achievement while participating in an aerial flight over the Aroe and Kai Islands. He was a member of the crew of a B-24D type aircraft in a formation forma-tion engaged on a photographic mission. Langgoer airport was the target to be bombed upon completion comple-tion of the photographic mission. Valuable and important intelligence intelli-gence resulted from the accomplishment accom-plishment of this mission which was carried out in the face of intense in-tense anti-aircraft fire and interception inter-ception by enemy fighters. Bombs were dropped on the airfield at Langgoer, causing heavy damage. In the ensuing engagement with the enemy fighters, twelve of the enemy planes were definitely destroyed de-stroyed and one was probably destroyed. de-stroyed. Most of the B-21D's were damaged on this mission and two were lost. Your son was responsible for shooting down one of the enemy en-emy fighters. Almost every hour of every day your son, and the sons of other American mothers, are doing just such things as that here in the SW Pacific. Theirs is a very real and very tangible contribution to victory and to peace. 1 would like to tell ybit how genuinely gen-uinely proud I am to have' men such as your, son in my command, and how gratified I am to know that young Americans with such courage and resourcefulness are fighting our country's battle against the aggressor nations.
