Show Student Dies After Fall From Fender Accident Happened Enroute to Fillmore; Was Freshman at DHS Gerald Mitchell, 16, son of Mel-vin Mel-vin and Frances Mitchell of this city died late Thursday afternoon from injuries suffered in a fall from a fender of a two-ton truck at 5:15 p.m. A freshman at Delta high school, young Mitchell with Alexander Day of Fillmore and seven other students from the school, were occupants oc-cupants of the truck, which was driven by Lloyd Keele, a senior at Millard high school in Fillmore. Enroute from Delta to Fillmore, Gerald and five others were riding on the platform of the truck. Gerald Ger-ald moved from the platform to the running board and onto the fender and had been riding there when the truck struck a rough spot in the road seven miles north of Fillmore. The youth was thrown to the roadway with the front and rear wheels of the truck passing over him. Stopping the truck immediately, the students took the boy, while still unconscious, to the Fillmore hospital, .where Dr. Dean Evans pronounced him dead upon arrival. An investigation by County Sheriff Culvert Robison and County Coun-ty Attorney Milon A. Melville has begun and an inquest was being conducted Thursday night by Edward Ed-ward Peterson, Fillmore precinct justice of the peace. Funeral services were held in the Delta Second Ward chapel on Monday for Gerald Mitchell with the choir opening the services by singing, "Oh, My Father." Opening Open-ing prayer was given by Marvin Moody. An accordion solo was given giv-en by Dale Johnson. Marion Hen-rie Hen-rie spoke, and was followed by Glen Rawlinson who sang, "One Vacant Chair." Bishop A. O. Gardner Gard-ner spoke and was followed by Norma Hannifin who played, "Oh Dry Those Tears." Principal Glen Seegmiller spoke and was followed with a song by Eugene Young. Bishop Henderson gave the closing clos-ing remarks. The choir sang. "Shall We Meet Beyond the River." Closing Clos-ing ptayer was given by Norman Gardner. Interment was made in the Delta Del-ta cemetery with Wililam Mitchell dedicating the grave. |
