Show Solace Louisiana Heaviest Taxed NEW YORK. For whatever solace it might prove to residents resi-dents of other states, the fact is that residents of Louisiana pay more taxes per person than any other American citizens. A study of the question by a commerce clearing house disclosed dis-closed that the state of Louisiana collects the highest tax per person per-son in the United States $92.19 for each inhabitant. The figure was for the 1948-49 tax period. Nebraskans, on the other hand, paid the lowest per capita state tax, $35.92, with New Jersey Jer-sey next low with an average of $40.90. The average per capita state tax was $47.43, or 94 per cent more than the average of $29.60 for the 1938-39 tax period. In total dollar collections of taxes, New York led with 892 million. California was next with 854 million. Total 1948-49 collections were 8.33 billion, or 117 per cent more than the 3.75 billion collected in the 1938-39 period. |
