Evva wrote that she II ..s sort of looking forward to MII ;nday. That is the day we cross International Date Line It's II yy tradition to have an initia-ls n of some sort for all who have J er crossed it. From what I can III a out the ceremony is going to rough." She was right, as her II goes on to tell. Well, yesterday was the day crossing the 180th Meridian ernational Date Line. At 10 o'-- I ck it was announced that all isengers and troops who had ;er crossed, must wear their thes backwards. At 1:30 all who received summons were to et in the dining room. My sum ns stated that I was being ,rged with not rendering proper pect to the royal party which pared the welcome of the Gold-Drago- There were about 30 of us. One one we were led blindfolded jthe upper deck. First we had ,walk through a big trough of .ghetti. Gad, it felt funny, par-darl- y when you didn't know at it was. hen we had to kneel down ore a big fat fellow dressed as itune. We were supposed to nis feet, but instead, someone ped a gooey pie in front of i and as I put my head down leone pushed my face into the pie. "From there wo were taken be-fore the Golden Dragon, where charges were read and asked if we were guilty or not guilty. 1 plead-ed not guilty and said that, legal-ly, I shouldn't even be there, be-cause the name on my summons was spelled wrong, which it was Therefore the party summoned wasn't even aboard .the ship. 'There isn't anyone on this ship by the name of Eva Reid. (That would really hold good in any U. S. court, too.)' " "Anyway, besides being pro-nounced guilty of the charges, I was accused of travelling under an aias besides, so the judge said give her the double works. Will I ever learn to keep my mouth shut. Thought I'd get out of it entirely, but instead got a double dose that consisted of the devil taking a few jabs at me with his pitch-fork, which was hooked to a bat-tery, thus an electric shock. Next, raw eggs, catsup mustard, corn flakes and oatmeal were dumped on my head. "What a mess and the entire ship's complement watching. Well, it was a good laugh for them, but I'm still combing soggy corn flakes out of my hair even after an hour in the shower afterward. "The deck was decorated with streamers, balloons and every-thing. Everyone in the ceremony wore costumes two mermaids, the devil, a dragon, judges in pur-ple robes just everything. I was really surprised that ships carried ajl that stuff just for the cere-mony. It was really a lot of fun. The women got off easy, though. Black paint, graphite, crude oil and that sort of thing were dump-ed on the fellows." Evva arrived in Japan Oct. 17.
