Tho northbound train, No. 9, which ordinarily has tho right of way, was in tho chargo of Thomas Newton, motorman, and C. F. Fowler, conductor, con-ductor, both of Ogden, while tho southbound, a special, was bolng run by J. J. Tillman, motorman, and F. F. Hansen, conductor, also of Ogden. Tho two trains camo together three miles south of Urlgham City. Seeing that the special had disregarded disre-garded running orders as ho understood under-stood them, Motorman Newton of.tha regular put on tho brakes In a des-perato des-perato endeavor to avoid a smash. Ho had brought his trainalmost to a halt when tho special crashed into Dcsplto their knowledgo that it crash was Inevitable, both motormen stuck to their posts. Newton's arm was broken. Mamo for tho wreck was put up to tho crew of tho special train in a report re-port made for tho company by W. S Law, trainmaster, after six hours' Investigation. In-vestigation. The special, ho charged, had failed to obey tho operating ' rules. j So quick wero tho trains hurled together that the passengers had only time to start up in horror in their seats before tho crash in which tho front ends of both cars wero reduced , to wreckage. Tho forco of tho im- j pact swept them heavily against tho seats ahead. Shattered glass rained about them. Relief Is Delii) ed. So complete, was the demolition of tho cars that traffic was blocked for threo hours. This prevented sending relief trains, and for more than an hour tho injured wero without care, except such emergency bandaging as other passengers were able to administer. admin-ister. When word of tho accident reached Brigham City scores of automobiles au-tomobiles set forth for the scene, and their cars were turned Into improvised impro-vised ambulances for convoying tho injured to that place. A. W. KUlngson of Ogden, traffic manager of the O. L. & I., hurried to the place and supervised the work of clearing away the wreckage. Dr. A. L. Brown of Brigham City, railroad rail-road physician for tho O. L. & I , gave his attention to tho injured, having tho more seriously hurt taken to his private hospital. From there tho Injured, after receiving re-ceiving treatment, with tho exception of a few, wero ablo to go to their homes. Great excitement prevailed in Brighnm City among tho thousands of residents and visitors when word of tho accident waB received. Hundreds Hun-dreds ot Injuries wero directed to hospitals and various municipal authorities au-thorities by persons who feared that relatives or friends wero among the victims. Traffic Is Tied Up. Tho tlo-up In trnffic proved embarrassing em-barrassing for those, who planned to leave tho Peach day celebration early. Tho first of tho trains, after the lino finally was cleared, departed at 7:15 p. m. This nnd subsequent trains wero loaded to capacity. The wrecked trains consisted ot threo cars each, about fifty passengers passen-gers being aboard each. In an official statement Issued by W. S. Law, trainmaster of tho road, late last night the blame for the accident ac-cident waa placed on the crow ot tho special southbound train. Trainmaster Train-master Law declared that this train crow overlooked tho schedulo of tho regular northbound train. He said tho steel equipment prevented wholesale whole-sale fatalities. m m |
