Fully one-half ot the girls who attend at-tend tho University of Utah last year supported themselves In whole or In part, according to statistics compiled by Miss Lucy M. Van Cott, doan of women. Theso statistics show that, out of 729 girls registered In the university, 464 had homes outside ot Salt Lake City and 360 earned part or all of their expenses whllo attending school. It Includes tutoring, teaching teach-ing In schools, teaching china painting, paint-ing, teaching music, playing In orchestra, orches-tra, singing, piano accompanying, clerking In stores, offices and post offices, telephono operating, attending attend-ing children, professional cooking, general housework, waiting on table, supervising play-grounds, Ironing In laundries, candy making, canvassing, acting as cashier, doing millinery work, bookkeeping, stenography, soliciting so-liciting for orders, keeping boarders, sewing, embroidering, canning vegetables, vege-tables, packing fruit, census taking, school enumerating, copying, reading examination papers, manicuring, shampooing, sham-pooing, doing general office work, doing do-ing library work, washing and Ironing, houso cleaning, doing supervisory work. Miss Van Cott gives attontlon to tho care and wolfaro of young women attending tho university, especially thoso coming from othor states and from parts ot Utah outsldo ot Salt Lake City, She not only attends to tho spoclal needs of young women during school hours, but uses every precaution to seo that thoy aro properly prop-erly cared for at boarding placos. She Is In charge of a loan fund which has dono a great deal to assist deserving de-serving students by lending them stcull sums of money tor convenient periods of tlmo without Interest.
