Princess Kawanakakoa gavo among her reasons that Hawaii has becomo ono of tho principal units of the American Republic and that being tho military koy to tho Pacific and tho site of a 120,000,000 naval station and with garrisons of United States troops numbering 11,000 men and already al-ready known as tho Gibraltar of tho Pacific, and whero great ilects of Amcricanwcssels arc to be rendezvoused rendez-voused it was appropriate that ono of tho new super dreadnoughts bo named nam-ed The Hawaii. A further reason for naming a warship war-ship Hawaii was that tho namo would impress its foreign population with tho idea that tho federal government Is paying moro and more attention to the islands, and in this manner would assist in that preparedness which works for peaco. This is the first time that a titled woman ever visited the Navy Department to request that a battleship be named after the country coun-try of her birth for when sho was born, Hawaii was a Hawaiian mon-nrchy, mon-nrchy, but Is now a loyal territory of tho United States. |
