Show THE J.A.W0LFE STOCK COMPANY Putting on Good Plays, Giving Satisfaction. Two Performances, Today To-day and Tonight. "A Study in Scarlet," one of Sherlock Sher-lock Holmes, detective stories, was the bill at the opera house Wednesday evening, and to Frank Long fell the honor of Impersonating tho famous character, which has charmed English Eng-lish fiction readers for over a decade. The play is a popular one. In every city where It has been presented It has brought the theatre-going publio In throngs to the doors. Wllllan Gillette Gil-lette passed two prolltable seasons with It, and later Herbert Kclcey realized one of the great triumphs of his career In the title role. It was rather a big undertaking for the Wolfe company, but they surprised sur-prised their many friends here by a suberb presentation. The scenic effects ef-fects and staging was complete In every detal. Tho audience came to an early realization of this, and gavo them a helping hand. There was not much of an opportunity opportu-nity Wednesday evening for the other members of the company, as the play centers in the personality of Sherlock Holmes. Even J. II. Wolfe was content con-tent with a small part, that of Dr. Watson. Miss Grace Hud had no opportunity to display her ability last evening but the well selected repertoire re-pertoire has given them all a chance to shine. Herbert Dobbins was a villain Wednesday night, but a good looklnj; one, and this alone covers a multitude of sins. In the part of Larrabcc he was seen to advantage. Mr. Dobbins, besides possessing an attractive at-tractive personality, is at all times graceful and natural, and never gets "chesty." In the part of Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Long did well. So well, in fact, that his every movement wasapplauded. In the last scene lie was specially good, and the brief touch of sentiment as tho curtain fell was a fitting termination termina-tion to the sttcnuotis career of the detective. The author has drawn Holmes as an incarnation of wisdom. He possesses an infallible Instinct, from which lie advances most wonderful wonder-ful deductions. Helsublo to tell by the color of one's eyebrows what they ate for breakfast and from the manner man-ner In which one wears his cravat, just how many drinks ho tnkes In a day. Though the character is an impossible creation, it tills the bill, forms the basis of a good, pure, interesting in-teresting drama. Thursday. On Thursday "Hazel Kirk" was given as a Thanksgiving matinee, and a good number was in attendance. Tho play proved as acceptable as usual. At night, Leo Tolstoy's great 'Resurrection" 'Res-urrection" was presented. This proved prov-ed a heavy proposition, but was handled handl-ed in a cry oteditablc manner. Friday Night. "Carimen" was tlie bill last night and gave the iiirral satisfaction. Saturday Night. Tonight tho bill is "Home, Sweet Home, a delightful, sympathetic, soul Inspiringstory abounding in love plots. This afternoon a 10 cent matinee Is given, "The Man of Mystery.'' Tne Wolfe Stock Co. has made good all through, presenting splendid plays in a splendid way at popular prices. |
