The Democratic papers can not but admit the country's unpaialled prosperity pros-perity during the past eight ycais, but they make the point that the Increased In-creased cost of living Is all out of proportion pro-portion to the prosperity and they want to cut the tariff. The average American Lu man who doesn't like to be Imposed on even when that Imposition doesn't hurt him seveiely and this appeal of the Demounts Is one that touches many. However, the aigument Is false, and the voteis only need to stop and think a few minutes to get at the situation properly. Now, conceding, for the sake of the aigument that some of the necessities of life are higher now than they weie fiom 18IM-18MI under the last icvlslon of the tarllf by the Demociatlo party. Ilread and meat were cheap in those days, but people went without food. Clothing was cheap, but people went without lalnment. Hardware and lutnlwr were cheap, but people did not build houses. Land was cheap, but people did not buy farms. Livestock was cheap, but farmers did not buy stock. Kver)thlng was cheap, but no one could buy. Today bread and meat may be a little lit-tle higher, but no one goes hungiy, Clothing may be a little higher, but all aic clad. Hardwaie and lumber may be a little higher, but throughout through-out the whole land people arc building build-ing houses. Farm lands have doubled in value, but over the country men arc buying farms. Many farm animals have more than doubled in value, but all over the country men aic buying stock. Sites for industries arc higher and material and labor arc higher.but enterprising men aro purchasing sites and material and establishing industries. indus-tries. Wages are higher, but employers employ-ers are employing men. The soup houses have disappeared and the market mar-ket has taken Its place. Has the cost of living Increased disproportionately dis-proportionately with Increased prosperity? pros-perity? Most assuredly not, and the man who deslies to return to the conditions con-ditions when the cost of living was very small, vet not small enough to come within the wages and work he could command isccitainly foolish. |
