Show Thcro will probably be a kicl; coming com-ing from some of the residents along Main and Center streets who are compelled com-pelled to put down asphalt or cement walks, and no doubt the council will come in for a goodly share of abuse, but this should not in anywise deter that body lu the future from ordering good walks placed wherever needed. The people may growl and grumble at present, but once the walks arc down and they havo an opportunity to appreciate the convenience and beauty of the same, the kick will lose Its vigor and finally be turned Into a love pat. At Hoopston, Illinois, some of the progressive citizens desired to build a commodious central school building, but tho property taxable for school put poses was not sutllclent to raise the necessary money. The Assessor, As-sessor, w ho was a progressionist and could look far enough Into the future to sec the giowth of the town, hit upon up-on the plan of raising the assessment. This was done to the extent of trebling treb-ling former assessments. Everybody kicked except a few who had tho public pub-lic sphlt. Enough money was secured se-cured to build a mngnlliclcnt three-story three-story brick with all modern com en-fences. en-fences. Tho building was really larger and better than needed at that time, and the citizens were veiy sore at the burden laid upon them. At the next election every progressionist was kicked out, of course. However, In two j ears the town grew from 1,000 to 5,000 In population, and tho peo saw their mistake. At tho following election all tho progressionists were returned to office and tho assessor was sent to the legislature. Logan city needs good sidewalks and should have them, and the only kick coming at tho action of tho present council Is that they do not reach far enough at a time. |
