Show SMITHFIELD WATERWORKS Discussed at mass meeting Wednesday Sentiment seems in favor fa-vor of Bonding. i A mass meeting in lllllyard's Hall at Smilhtlcld, Wednesday evening, called for the purpose of considering the advisability of bonding for water works, was largely attended, Indicative Indic-ative or the intcicst that Is being taken In the proposed Improvement. A general good feeling seemed to prevail pre-vail and there was a decided sentiment senti-ment in favor of the proposition. Mayor Peterson represented the city administration and in a clear-cut manner explained the estimated cost ol a water svstein, and also dwelt at some length "on the advantages. Ho said that the outer system, the reservlor, development of springs and system to the city would cost about $!),000, and the distributing system over the city somewhere between be-tween $15,000 and $1(1.000. This latter system would be divided Into districts, dis-tricts, of course, and the estimated cost Is about no per lot. Mayor Peterson urged upon the assemblage the necessity or securing good water and plenty of It. and showed very plainly that the cost of the proposed system Is comparatively small and I each person's portion of the bin den will be so small that It will hardly be felt. There has been some opposition to this proposed water system, and an attempt has been made by some to convince those In poor circumstances that the burden would be too grc.it for them to bear, but at the meeting everything was explained so lucidly that It is now believed a great deal of the opposition has been dU"ed of. Resides Mayor Peter . Messrs. J. V. Allen and A. H. Clian.uers talked in favor or the bond Issue and as a whole It Is considered that the meeting meet-ing was decidedly successful. A gieat majority of those In attendance were out-spoken In favor of bonding. The election to decide whether or not the bond Issue shall be. made will be held on Wednesday of next week, February Kith, and it Is sincerely hoped that our sister city will come outot the rut and by voting in favor or bonding, show that she believes in progress and the 20th century conveniences. |
