Show COLLEGE AEEAIRS Meeting of Trustees and report of Pres. Llndford. Tuesday was a happy day for the B. Y. Pres. Joseph F. Smith and Bishop Wm. B. Preston visited this institution and met with the other members of the Board of Trustees. As a result of the meeting Pres. Llnford is all smiles and declares the future brighter for his charge than ever before. With the financial conditions brightening up, the attendance Increasing In-creasing and the faculty being strengthened, everything bids fair for the substantial progress of this instl-utlon. instl-utlon. Pres. Smith and Bishop Preston met with the students In the large chapel of tho west building at 10 a. m. Asldo from a large assemblage assembl-age of students there were present several local authorities of the Stake and a great number of lay members of the church. Tho remarks of the speakers were along the same line as those of the speakers at the last general gener-al conference, exhorting tho young people to adopt practical work and to avoid learning how to think without being able to act. At the board meeting held In the afternoon a report of the condition of the school was given by President Llnford. It showed an increase over last year of 103 students, making the attendance, Including all branches of the college, 734. The number of classes class-es was reported as 105, In which very successful work was being done, the faculty being very strong In praise of the work of students. The most important work done by the board was In Increasing considerably consider-ably the appropriation for the college and establishing a civil engineering department. These two acts will add greatly to the strength of the Institution Institu-tion and no doubt many needed changes, further accommodations and a still larger increase in attendance next year will bo the result. The matter of employing the faculty for next year was given to a committee. The following resolutions of respect were passed, relative to the death of Apostle Brlgham Young. "Whereas It has pleased ourlleavenly Father to remove from our midst by death the'PresIdcnt of this institution, institu-tion, our beloved fellow trustee, Brlgham Young, be It and It Is, ' Resolved: That while we feel to bow to the decree of Divine Providence In the taking away of our co-laborer, we not only regard his death as a great loss to the Brlgham Young College Col-lege but keenly sense a personal sorrow therein. And that wo regard with profound pleasuro the able and conscientious con-scientious manner in which tho deceased de-ceased ever discharged his duties both as Trusteo and as the President of this institution. And that In his death the Brlgham Young College has lost a friend, the State a pioneer and Empire Em-pire builder, tho nation a high-minded and patriotic citizen. And that we extend to the allllcted family of our departed brother our deep sympathy, and our hope that In their great allllctlon their hearts may be comforted." com-forted." Tho first dinner served by tho girls of the Domestic department was served Tuesday to Pres. Smith and tho board. Tho girls were warmly praised by tho recipients and Pres. Smith spoko to them encouragingly on that class of work. President Smith returned to Salt Lake City Wednesday morning. |
