Show ! illLLi ii Unjust Criticism of Bingham By Salt Lake Papers Brings Pointed Reply From Bingham's Mayor Refers to Relations Between Town and County, and Shows That Town Has Always Been Ready to Co-operate. Mayor Q. . Kelly, In reply to the story which appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune last Sunday, has addressed . that paper the following letter: Salt (Lake Tribune. Slanderous misrepresentations in regard re-gard to the true conditions in Bingham appear bo often in the press that the administration has adopted the policy of simply Ignoring them, and continuing continu-ing to enforce the law to the best of 'its ability. The article In Sunday's Tribune, however, headed "County Deputies Execute Big Raid in Bingham Canyon" demands some comment. Your Informant Is necessarily familiar famil-iar with conditions; therefore, he must answer to the public for the-wil-ful lies which ho incorporates in his report Relative to the arrest of "alleged gamesters'" if there is evidence that ' these Greeks wore violating the law, we approve of the action of the depu- ' ties; for our police force is working i under orders to allow no gambling or r : "bootlegging" in the corporate limits of the town. Our officers are capable and efficient and have .the situation well in hand. iBut we are not "butting In" on the county's business, and as this gam- bling was in Upper Bingham, why blame the Bingham administration? . iLesides policing the town, they ren-. ren-. der valuable assistance to tiie govern- ?3 gent in arresting 1, w W.s and ferret- AVig out evidence of plots against th! United States. The notorious Evsene Smith, recently bound over by the federal fed-eral court, was taken into custody by Al Poutach, our chief of police, and two others are in Jail on the way to a place where their propoganda will have less effect. The truth is handled very carelessly in the following paragraph of your article: ar-ticle: "Coincident with the raid last night came the announcement that the t county attorney and sheriff had issued an order to the effect that the Bingham Bing-ham police could issue no more complaints com-plaints or have anything to do with the town hall. This action was taken, because of the alleged lack of co-operation on the part of the town police with the county officials." (By what authority do the county attorney and the sheriff issue orders to the Bingham police? We do not give a d about this. . We will run our own affairs, and enforce the law, but w,ill explain the "Alleged lack of co-operation". The admin lstration has done everything in its power to co-operate with the county officials recently, as mayor, I ordered the keys to the jail to be kept under lock, but '. asy of access to any city or county official, as an extra precaution, while I. W( 'W.'s and tough characters, are being held. (Heretofore, through an arrangement with the county, the keys had been simply left lying around, and any one could walk in and unlock the Jail. Under the pew regulations, the deputies depu-ties had access to the jail whenever necessary, hut they have circulated rumors about town that the kevs hud been denied them. Deputy Sheriffs Fullmer, V, B Jones, Ray Kernar and Si Jones (the old chief of pollce newly aupainied deputy), are all honorable men; the two first named are supposed to represent rep-resent the sheriffs office; Ray Ken-iier Ken-iier is mppoHed to represent the governor, gov-ernor, and SI Jones, we suppose, also represents the governor's office. Their jurisdiction covers Highland Uoy district and Upper Bingham, but everything is so moral up there, these deputies can put In all their time helping Bingham manage her own affairs. From time immemorial the town officials of-ficials have gone out of their way to assist the deputy sheriffs In their work; from the town clerk down to the janitor they have been errand boys; answering phone cells, and ' feeding prlsoncra of .the county and are still ready to co-operate; but because be-cause we will iiot allow these deputies to take entire possession of the city ball and run things in thlr own swe;t way, they accuse us of "lack of cooperation" co-operation" and find new quarters. Yours very truly, Q. U. KHLLY, Mayor of the Town of Bingham. |
