Show Puts Ban On "Honker" Portland Auto Club Favors Powerful Signal. Necessary For Public Safety But Use Must Be Limited Tho directors of tho Portland, Oregon Ore-gon Automobllo Club have put tho ban on the "honk, honk" typo of automobile horn. In a recent meeting resolutions wero adopted calling their membors attention to tho fact that "the wise use of an adequate warning signal Is the most efficient aid In tho prevention pre-vention of accident." To this end loud enough to servo as an adequate recommend the observance of the provisions of tho so-called Chicago ordinance, which requires tho use ot a signal producing "an abrupt sound sufficiently loud to serve as an ade-warning ade-warning of danger," but restricts its use to times when necessary ' to sound a warning of danger. In this connection the club also resolved to discourage the use of inadequate warning signals "as they tend to increase, rather than reduce, the possibility ot accident." I In taking this stand, the Portland Automobile Club, Is following the example ex-ample of a score ot cities throughout the country, which have determined on this method ot reducing unnecessary unneces-sary noise to a minimum and at the . same time enforcing tho use ot an adequate signal device for the protection pro-tection ot the public. In his report W. J, Clemens, president presi-dent of the club makes reference to tho courtesy duo from ono motorist to another, and from the motorist to the public In general ana states Hint in no phase of motoring is this more evident than In tho use of tho warning warn-ing signal. A harsh signal must be used, but it must bo used properly to givo a fair and reasonable warning warn-ing wl'on necessary. Mr. Clemens declares de-clares that tho discourteous, selfish, ! Joy riding type of motorist, who rep resents but a small minority of automobile au-tomobile drivers, Is the eauso of any hostilo feeling that the public may have towards the motorist, and maintains main-tains that this Is caused not only by reckless driving and unlawful speeding, speed-ing, but by unwarranted and uncc-essary uncc-essary use of the warning signal. |
