It was summertime, and Mr. nnd Mis Glrvan 1ml established them-80lve3 them-80lve3 ns sutnmc-r boarders on n largo larm, so that their only child, Edna, might havo a long-cherished wish realized. re-alized. Llttlo slx-ycarold Edna had heard peoplo talk of farms and farm llfo, nnd sho had teased her parents to tnko her to tho "real country," whore thoy havo cows, horses, chickens, and whero tho men dig potatoes. They arrived there Saturday, and tho following day Edna was placed in the vlllago Sunday ' school. Sho said nothing about it on her return home, and her parents had no reason for thinking that their llttlo girl had learned a practical lesson; but on tho following day when sho was given somo bread crumbs to feed tho chickens hor face simply beamed with delight, and a fow moments later hor mother, glancing out of tho window, saw her throw tho bread crumbs Into u llttlo pool of water, and tho chickens had to stretch their necks far out Into tho water to get tho feed. Sho meant to ask Edna why sho did It, but tho incident passed out of her mind. Akfow days later Edna's father had occasion to go to tho city, and when ho returned ho brought hotho a hand-somo hand-somo locket and chain for his llttlo girl, It being intended as a surprlso from her father and mothor; but Edna, while plainly showing sho was do-lighted' do-lighted' at receiving the gift, showed no surprlso whntever, but accepted It In a cool, matter-of-fact manner. Iloth iher fnther and mothor noticed this with surprise, and were keenly disappointed. Finally her mother said to Edna: "Rut Isn't my little girl surprised sur-prised to receive so beautiful n gift from papa nnd mamma?" "No," little Edna replied, "the golden text of tho Sunday school lesson on Sunday was: 'Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days.' And when you sent mo to feed tho little lit-tle chickens, every day I did 'casted' tho bread on the water, and so I 's'pected' something: my teacher 'splalned' it that way." |
