Show JUSTICE BRANGHAM 0. K. , That the technicalities of law and city judges with hearts larger than their sense of justice to the public are responsible, In a great measure, for acontinuance'of rowdyism, drunkenness, drunk-enness, lighting, gambling, and minor cvils.can hardly be disputed. Men and boys arrested for one or the other derelictions mentioned find an easy escape through somo technicality of law, or else arc let off with a light lino or a reprimand repri-mand from a kindly hearted judge who in his feeling for the culprit forgets his duty to the public. As a result, men disinclined to submit to the restraints Imposed by society continue their vlciousness at their own sweet will. Logan has hat much experience of tho kind, but just at present Is undergoing a new experience. In the justlces's chair sits a man not greatly learned In law but with a clear sense of his duty and a determination to administer ad-minister justice to tho public, and the Individual Individ-ual as well. Heretofore neither has had justice. jus-tice. Mr. Urangham is inclined to the belief that the law is Intended for the protection of tho innocent, that It Is designed as a preventative preventa-tive of misdemeanor and crime, and In order to serve its purpose should bo administered rather rigidly. As a result of this belief the disturbers of tho public peace have in the past few months paid in tines more than has been paid in several years previous. It might be worth while for tho willful to consider a few of the Judge's recent re-cent decisions for instance: Conviction for assault, 9150. Illicit Intercourse, $50 male, W0 female'. Urinating on streets at night $10. llrcaklng smallpox quarantine, $15 Hreaklng measles quarantine, ?.".. Using Indecent language, to woman, lidays In Jail Drunkenness, second olfenso, $ir,; third offense of-fense to be $20 and :t0 dajs in jail Gambling, 8100 for ring leader and $2o each for others. Atsaulting w ife, do days In Jail; commuted to 30 on plea of wlfo. On charge of tlshlng without license, and running away from Justice, $2.1. Disturbing audience, $5. These are Just a few Instances Indicative of Justice llraogham's disposition to uphold the dignity of tho law In preference lo favoring iho prisoner. Ills disposition to deliver severe penalties pen-alties serves two good purposes: It tends to warn tho careless and dellberato wrong-door and It encourages tho oitlcers In their cITorts. Justice Urangham is tho right man In tho right place, and in his expressed disposition to help clean up the Immorality of the city he will be loyally supported by the great matorlty of our citizens. 'It might be well for miscreants generally gen-erally to quit their meanness. |
