Show N Summer School A Success W. H. Apperly Tells Something About the Summer Session at the A. C. A "Logan has long been well known as our educational center for this inter-mountain region. Tho splendid courses of instruction given to large classes of earnest educators in our summer school at the A. C. of U. tlint hns just closed reflects great credit on our big institution on the hill" and keeps up our good name at home mid abroad. The nttendunee hns been much larger than last v year. Strong courses have been givoli by efficient effi-cient instructors. A spirit of good will, cheerfulness, nnd social equality pervaded all the work. All the public lectures were well attended and warmly received receiv-ed and appreciated. Perhnps the Inst one given on tho closing dny by President Widtsoc was ihc most practical nnd uplifting for tho following reasons: The lecture dealt directly with 'the bnsic principle in education aud it pointed out to teachers in plnin language the best way to concentrate, concen-trate, nnd how to develop mental power. The picture of man's relation re-lation to his environment nnd his true place in nnturo was well painted. If this lecture had been given on the opening dny and nil of the instructors had been present to profit by it, perhaps n still better class work would have been done in some cases. Let me illustrate. In most classes about enough work wns given to be properly digested; The rending of one or two books wns suggested. These were carefully rend nnd appreciat cd, but in some cases tho students were overfed and so many books were recommended that none were rend. Instructors should remember that hygiene laws oper- ' ato aa unerringly on tbo mentnl piano us the physical. Largo doses of literature or mathematics swallowed swal-lowed at a gulp may cnuse n bad case Of mental dyspepsin nnd give poor results in examination. '" One thing is certain all who attended tho summer school were well paid for the time spent. "We got a new inspiration to press on in the high nnd holy work of teaching and self improvement! and we will always hnve a good word to say about our great nnd growing institution nnd its well equipped faculty. ' Credit is- duo the respective committees, especially Dr.Thomas. the man of few words but generous gener-ous deeds. W. II. APPERLEY. |
