Sordid questions ot finance enter Into the consideration ot tho eligibility ot thoso upon whom an English monarch mon-arch would confer tho distinction of xnlghthood, and there are many who might uso tho coveted prefix "Sir" did they possess n larger Income It Is, roughly speaking, a rule that knighthood shall not be conferred lpon any one who has not an Income of at least $15,000 upon which to maintain main-tain his knightly dignity, while a baronet, baro-net, before his creation, must not only be found to hae nn Income ot at least $30,000 a ear, but must further oo able to purchaso a country scat and be able to suitably provide for his eldest son. While knighthood or ennoblement Is n mark of distinction awarded foi llstlngulbiied merit, It Is held that Its conference would only embarrass thoso who could not afford to keep up tho dignity of their station. |
