Show ENGLEY'S STATEMENT How He Was Jailed for At. Question. The following signed staterp been isstied by Jlr. Eugene Eiij To the Citizens of Teller Count Last evening I attended a I). mocraf-1 ic meeting of Teller county, at which meeting Jtr. Coates, candidate for lieutenant lieu-tenant governor, and T. JI. Patterson, with others, epoko. After Mr. Orman, candidate for governor gov-ernor o.:' the state, had spoken, I arose from my scat and asked him this questionwhether ques-tionwhether or not, if the next Legislature Leg-islature of this state passed a bill to re-enact capital punishment, te would sign the bill. He stated, I understood, that if such a bill was passed he would take it under un-der consideration. I then insisted that he giv" positive answer. . ' At that time some people in the audience au-dience who should be measured by the same characteristic that governed the people at Victor when they ma le their attack upon Governor Roosevelt, cried "Throw him out!" meaning me. The marshal of this city, Mi-. "Burton, and the sheriff of this county, Jlr. Stewarf, rushed me to jail, where they kept me for several hours. I had no object in view in asking the question I did except to understand the position of Jlr. Orman in case ho should be elected. I was the father of the law abolishing capital punishment in this state, and that was the nnlv roa- son I asked the question, on account of considerable criticism that had been made since the passage of tr'e bill by reason of some murders that have been committed in the state. I was not the father of Teller county. I was the only one that votec" for Teller Tel-ler county in the judicial district comprising com-prising five counties from whi, h I came at the time the bill was pa: d by a vote of 83 to 32. and I nskol nothing from Teller county on that account. I did not expect at that' time tc bo a rsi-dent rsi-dent or a citizen of his county. 1 desire say thf .if the people of this countQ cspective ..: political affiliation, af-filiation, are oppoiod to free speech, that 1 made a mistake in voting for Teller county, and from this time on until the election of November next I will do all I can to defeat the Democratic Demo-cratic ticket from fop to bottom, even ,f:i,Tfr? i'Ljrj'fiTn.r uobsb-iVui.se- rtr a canvass of this district. I am very sorry to :ay this, and reivt it verv much, but will nevertheless! do all 1 can to defeat the Democratic ticket-national, ticket-national, state, county aud Iprocinct and if these people want to put me in jail again for the exercise , of free! speech they willjhave the opportunity j to do so. Up to the present time' I have been in favor of the election of fie Demo- I cratic ticket in this district, but owing to the circumstances that h.-ive occurred occur-red within the past twenty-four hours, I will do everything I can to defeat it.
