Show Richfield and Cedar advance in LL tourney Richfield walked off with the District I Senior Little League tournament championship by defeating Cedar City 8-5. The Richfield crew had only one other game in the tournament, that was a 8-3 victory over Parowan in the opening round of play Thursday. In that battle Barry Willardson was the winning pitcher giving up five hits and three runs. Parowan sent Danny Stones and Daryl Jones to the mound. They gave up only seven hits in the contest. Picking up hits for Parowan were Greg Johnson, Kim Bess, Danny Stones, Mike Evans and Jeff Neil, all singles. Of the seven hits for Richfield only one was for extra bases, a double by Scott Brown. In the other ODenine round score on an error. In the fourth frame Cedar City again scored when Kric Chamberlain walked, lie moved to third on a single by j Kerry Cox and scored on a single '-by Kendell Smith. In the bottom of the fifth the victory was iced with two more runs. Charles Judd walked, moved to third on a single by Nathan Johnson and scored on a pass ball. Johnson also came on to score on a passed ball. Spectacular catches were made by each of the Cedar City outiielders, Craig Jensen, Nathan Johnson and Gary Jack. As a result Middleton gave up only one hit in the battle to the Dixie crew. In a consolation game South Sevier eliminated Parowan from the tournament with a 24-3 shallacking. South Sevier picked battle Dixie advanced to the second round of play with a hard fought 5-2 win over South Sevier. Morgan Humphries of Dixie held the South Sevier crew to just three hits in the contest. Tony Smith of South Sevier suffered the loss. Dixie had a pair of home runs in the contest. One a single by Chuck Ence in the fifth and the big blow was a three run homer by Jeff Wiscomb in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 deadlock. Roger Farnsworth of South Sevier also homered in the game. Cedar City drew an opening round bye but was paired against Dixie in the second round of play. In that battle David Middleton handled the pitching chores hurling the Cedar crew to a 5-2 vicotry and a spot in the championship game Saturday. Cedar City took an early lead in the contest pushing in two runs without benefits of hits in the second inning. Nathan Johnson walked and Middleton walked. 14 hits including four doubles in the contest. The Parowan crew was held to just three hits including in-cluding a double by Mike Evans. Singles were hit by Daryl Jones and Jeff Neil. All three hits came in the fourth frame and all three runs were scored in that inning. South Sevier picked up 10 runs in the first inning and 11 in the second to dominate the action. Saturday night Dixie and South Sevier were rematched in the consolation championship and South Sevier avenged their opening round loss with a 9-8 victory. South Sevier pushed in five runs in the first frame and looked like they were coasting to an easy victory. Dixie, however, rallied and knotted the score with four of their own in the fourth. South Sevier finally put together three hits to load the bases and Hansen lifted a sacrifice fly to score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth frame to win the game. The victory gave South Sevier third place in the tournament, behind Richfield and Cedar City. Johnson moved all the way around to score on passed balls. Middleton moved to third on passed balls and came on to |
