Show Richfield outlasts Cedar for Senior LL title A grand slam homerun by Scott Brown of Richfield boosted the Richfield crew to victory in the Utah District I tournament of the Senior Little League Saturday night. The four-run homergave the Richfield crew a 8-5 victory over the host Cedar City team in a seesaw see-saw battle from start to finish. The championship game, played over eight innings, lasted over three hours. Charles Judd nearly single handedly kept Cedar City in the contest with his hitting and fine defensive play. Judd belted a two run homer in the first inning of play, singled in a third run , collected three RBI's in the contest and doubled besides. He was three for three in the championship game. Also aiding the cause for the Cedar City in a losing effort was Hjivirt MiHHlntnn uhn h5iH n nnir Richfield again came back in the bottom of the frame. Two men walked and both were thrown out on the bases by Judd, the Cedar City catcher. The first was a pickoff at first base and the second was at second with Matt Ellingsen of Richfield trying to steal. A third walk, however, moved to second on a wild pitch and came on to score on an error, pushing Richfield out in front 4-li. In the sixth it was Middleton who knotted the score. He singled, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a wild pitch and came on to score on an error. Neither team scored in the 7th sending the game into extra innings. In the top . of the eighth Middleton got things started with a home run into right field to give Cedar City their first lead since the first inning. But again Richfield came through. The first two men drew walks, the third struck out, a third walk was given up to load the bases and with a one and one count Brown lifted his home run over the left field fence to end the game. Cedar City sent three pitchers to the mound. Kerry Cox got the starting call, he was lifted in the second for Kevin Robinson and Oscar Hulct came in the sixth. Brown went the distance for Richfield. Richfield advanced to the next level of tournament play be virtue of their win and had their first game in Las Vegas, Nev. Monday evening. In the bottom of the frame, two hits and two walks were converted con-verted to two runs by Richfield to keep pace. Richfield also collected a pair of hits, both singles in the second frame to go ahead in the contest 3-2. Neither team scored in the third and fourth innings of play, but in the top of the fifth Cedar knotted the score. Jensen belted a double to open the innings, but got trapped in a rundown between bet-ween third and home. Kendell Smith drew a walk and came on to score on a single by .Judd. |
