Show Red men face 'Rough Sledding' in final games I It's all uphill for the Cedar High School Redmen, but it's still not out of sight. What's not out of sight? The right to advance to the 3A state playoffs to be held in March at Weter State College in Ogden. The Redmen have three remaining games to play. A victory in all three-two are on the road -would still be a strong pitch for the Redmen and an almost certain berth. Two wins are a necessity if the Redmen are going to stay in the running at all and of course three losses would put them out completely. Going into this week's action the standings are as follows: Provo 13 0 American Fork 13 1 Dixie 8 5 Pleasant Grove 7 7 Spanish Fork 5 8 Springville 5 8 Cedar City 4 9 Timpview 4 9 Payson 1 13 In last week's action Provo, American Fork and Pleasant Grove all won two games with action both Wednesday and Friday nights. Cedar City drew a bye Wednesday and lost at Spanish Fork by one point 60 65. Provo, American Fork and Dixie have all cinched tournament berths with six of the nine to go to state. Pleasant Grove with their double win this week, victories vic-tories over Dixie and Payson, assured themselves of at least a tie for a tournament tour-nament spot. Payson is the only team completely out of the running, run-ning, and at this writing, on , standing alone the Redmen and the T-Birds of Timpview have the hardest struggle each with nine losses. But their remaining schedule is important and Spanish Fork, despite their 5 and 8 record have the toughest road to hoe to make the elite top six. I believe that Spanish Fork cannot make it leaving the real battle U'tween Timpview and Cedar. Spanish Fork has a record of 5 and 8 and must have seven wins to be assured of a playoff for a tournament spot. In three remaining games Spanish Fork faces Die top three clubs in the Region. Friday they take on Provo at Provo, then Wednesday of next week they meet American Fork at AF and wind up the season hosting Dixie. Give them at least two losses and possibly three. Pleasant Grove could be the spoiler for Timpview and Cedar. They host Cedar City in Friday's action take a bye in Wednesday's round and end the season at Timpview. As for Timpview their schedule including Payson at home Friday. A trip to Cedar City in Wednesday's action and Pleasant Grove at home in the finals. Springville is another team that does not have it made by any means. Here again it depends on the Redmen. Springville will be at Dixie Friday -- a game that the Flyers should win. Payson could pull another upset on their home court hosting Springville on Wednesday of next week and returning home to host the Cedar High Redmen in the final league game. Coach John Neilsen and his Redmen have not given up, but they know the road is rocky. Friday the Redmen will be on the road traveling north to take on Pleasant Grove. They will return to the home court for the final home game of the season Wednesday Wed-nesday against Timpview and will be at Springville on Friday, March 1 for the final league game. |
