Show School Board meets Enrollments projected Projected enrollments and classroom needs in the future were reviewed by Dr. J. Clair Morris, superintendent of the Iron County Schools at the Board of Education meeting held in Parowan Tuesday. Marked increases in the district based on census information taken in October 1977 indicate that the school enrollment for Iron County will jump to 4723 by 1982 without an in-migration taken into consideration. With the additions of the East Elementary including six new classrooms and the addition of a new Enoch Elementary it is anticipated that the district will be in need of additional classrooms by the 1980-81 school year. Visiting at the Parowan Elementary Elemen-tary the Board attended weekly flag ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and heard reports from the Principal, Floyd Matheson, PTA President, Mrs. Jim Robinson and from faculty representatives. Cooperative efforts of the school were emphasized by all and Mrs. Robinson expressed her appreciation of the teachers and staff and their apparent concern for students and their well being. Principal Matheson identified some capitol improvement needs including exterior painting, storage room for kitchen supplies, furniture for the faculty room, sidewalk improvement between the Elementary and the High School for lunchroom purposes, and playground improvement along with furnishings for two new classrooms. Principal Matheson indicated that all of the rooms in the school were now occupied including the industrial arts. Based on existing student enrollment of 336 class room average sizes for next year were estimated at 24 each for the first through third, and between 27 and 28 for the upper grades. With the addition of two new teachers next year there will be a mixed class of third and fourth grade students, a mixed class of fourth and fifth and a third combining fifth and sixth grade students. "We will assign each of the students currently enrolled a classroom and a teacher this spring so that every child will know just where he will be next year," Matheson said. The board spent several hours in executive session dealing with personnel per-sonnel matters. Recommendations from principals for next year were heard and a hearing concerning an employee recently dismissed from the District was heard. The board upheld the dismissal. |
