Saturday evening the Parsons dashed any conference con-ference hopes of the University of Southern Colorado had when they defeated them in Salt Lake City after the T-Birds had been forced into overtime to defeat Southern Colorado Friday night. But for Coach Stan Jack and his crew Monday night was the crushing blow as the Parsons literally blew them out of the gymnasium and possibly an KMAC title with a 106-78 shellacing. Sound Heating The Parsons, with only six league victories in the RMAC season gave the T-Birds T-Birds their soundest beating of the season and one that left the T-Birds in a position of having to depend on other teams to score victories in order to share in the RMAC title. The Parsons, led by Allen Collins with 27 points, Bruce Bravard with 24 and Tillman Overstreet with 19 jumped off to a 9-0 lead and SUSC never really got back in the game, although they narrowed the gap to five at 9-4. 9-4. Halftime lead Westminster lead at halftime 50-38. SUSC on the strength of the shooting of Chava Lopez and Marc Wilson to narrow the margin to eight at 50-44, but Westminster West-minster never let it get closer. The game was really put away at the midway point of the second half of play when the Parsons broke away from a 66-56 lead to score a fieldgoal and six straight foul shots, including a pair of technicals on the bench to move to an 18 point advantage-one that the T-Birds T-Birds could never overcome. Wilson led the scoring for the T-Birds with 25 and Lopez hit for 24. But in the first half of play the Parsons took the second shots away from SUSC as they dominated the boards, then used the foul line to control the game in the waning minutes as SUSC fought to ca tch up. The Parsons had 26 points from the foul line in the second half of play. Victory overUSC Friday night on their home court the T-Birds were forced into overtime before managing a 78-77 victory. In the first half of play SUSC got behind early but came back to tie the score at 10 all ' in a jumper by Lopez. The score was tied at 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 before the T-Birds T-Birds reeled off three straight buckets to gain a 24-18 24-18 advantage and coasted to a 12 point lead at halftime at 44-36. The T-Birds hit 64 percent of their shots in the first half while the visitors of Southern Colorado hit for only 48. But the second half LOSK BIG ONE. SUSC's Scott Brown and Paul Pratt put the defensive clamps on Southern Colorado's Tony White. belonged to Southern Colorado as Herman Phillips took over control of the boards. With only four takedowns in the first half the second leading rebounder in the RMAC took off in the second period and ended up with 18 boards to lead the Colorado comeback. Comeback The visiting Indians picked away at the SUSC lead early in the first half and at the 12.29 mark Tony White hit a jumper to knot the score at 52-all. The Indians In-dians broke away to take a three point advantage at 66-63 66-63 only to have Monte Widdison hit one from the field and Scott Brown hit one of two from the foul line to tie the score at 66 all. Again White hit for the Indians for a two point ad- vantage and with 44 seconds remaining Lopez tied it at 68 all and the Indians missed an attempt at the buzzer forcing the game into overtime. SUSC came on for the victory in the five minute overtime but without benefit of a fieldgoal. Wilson scored the first six points for the T-Birds T-Birds all from the line to give SUSC a 74-72 advantage. ad-vantage. The margin was increased to 76-72 on a pair of free throws by Widdison. Hold onto lead At the 12 second mark the T-Birds were out by three on two foul shots by Lopez and they gave away a bucket to Brian Ilochevar to make it 78-77. With one second left the T-Birds attempted to inbound the pass deep to avoid the shot and the pass hit the rafters. That turned the ball over to the Indians, under their own bucket, with still one second remaining. The inbound in-bound o pass had to go deep and the Indians did not get a shot away giving the T-Birds the victory. Against the Indians, SUSC was out rebounded 44-33 with Phillips doing the damage with his 18. The over-all shooting, after a 64 percent from the field in the first half slipped to 47 for the T-Birds on the whole against 46 for Colorado. Wilson led the T-Bird scoring with 24, Widdison was the leading rebounder with 12 and Paul Pratt led both teams with eight assists. Also in double figures was Lopez with 18 and Widdison with 14. For the Indians, Phillips was also the leading scorer with 19 with Tony White hitting for 16 and Bob Hochevar connecting for 13. |
