Show Energy Conservation-Try Walking If you think energy conservation con-servation is beneath you, : you're right. A powerful conservation source is beneath you at all times -your feet. Utahns should take up brisk walking as a means of conserving gasoline as well as gasoline dollars. Try walking to school, to work, to church, to the grocery store -anywhere and everywhere possible. While out walking, you'll notice things you never saw before because they whizzed right past you in the car. Form a "foot pool" with friends. Arrange to walk places with friends and family to share the fun and exercise. Walk to the grocery store and buy just what you can carry with you comfortably. You won't buy junk food and non-essentials because you -won't want to pack the extra weight. You'll have to shop more often, but you'll end up buying fewer calories while you're burning up more. Have you jever wondered why people drive to the gym, pool, or health spa to exercise once they get there? By not walking, they miss out on the possibilities of exercise in transit. People who rarely walk more than around the block with the dog on a leash probably say: "What about conserving my own energy? If I walk anywhere I'll be too tired for anything else." Well, once you get in shape, you'll have more energy than ever. Lack of exercise contributes to that fatigued feeling. And walking is one of the best and easiest body conditioners. Contrary to what some joggers may think, exercise does not have to be painful to iiManmnHHmiiH be beneficial. Just because walking is so natural, its fitness benefits should not be overlooked. Most people can get as much benefit from briskly walking three miles a day as from jogging them. But the key word here is briskly. You've got to keep up enough of a pace - about 15 minutes a mile - to get your heart beating at 70 to 85 percent of its maximum rate. Shuffling along with your hands in your pockets and your eyes to the ground, while better than sitting in a car, won't benefit you as much as a good, brisk walk. Don't be afraid to stand up i straight, swing your arms, and keep up a good pace. So put on a comfortable pair of shoes and do something that's beneath you! Get out and walk for health and enjoyment. |
