Governor Scott Matheson was the first Utah governor gover-nor to address a Girls' State CONFERENCE LAST WEEK AT THE SUSC auditorium. The young women listened attentively to the governor's remarks encouraging them to take an active role in their government. Governor at Girls' State "I would hope Mi this group of young women' . would be willing to take another look at this system, set aside the negative "and look at : its metit. Take the time to be. informed. ..don't miss the opportunity at girls' state to learn about our system and become a participator," stated Governor Scott Matheson in addressing the Girls' State Conference Con-ference which was held at Southern Utah State College last week. Matheson was the first governor of Utah to .address the annual -conference. The governor lamented statistics, from a survey by the National Assessment for Education which show a sharp decline in the interest and understanding of government by teenagers nationwide. He said that since the 18 year old vote was granted in 1972 that voting records show that 18 to 25 year olds exercise their right to vote less than any other group. He also noted a decline in social studies classes nationwide, Matheson said that the decisions made in the state capitol "profoundly affect" the lives of Utah's citizens. He also commented on a recent trip to schools in Ogden and the advice he received from students. An elementary student suggested that he smile more often when he is on television and the governor said that he intends to follow that advice. He said that leaving the capitol and trav eling throughout the cities and counties of the state give him the "proper perspective of his job." Lt. Governor David Monson, State Attorney General Robert Hansen, retired State Supreme Court Judge A.H. Elliott, State Deputy Auditor Laura K. Smith and State Treasurer Linn C. Baker also spoke at the afternoon af-ternoon session explaining the responsibilities of their offices and their concerns. |
