Show Smith Family Gains Certificate tor Home Restoration The Jesse N, Smith Family Association of Utah has been awarded a Certificate of Commendation Com-mendation by the American Association tor State and Local Lo-cal history for the restoration of a landmark home in Parowan, Paro-wan, according to a communication commu-nication from that association's associa-tion's headquarters in Nashville, Nash-ville, Tenn. Awards chairman, A. J. Wall Jr., director of the Old Stur-bridge Stur-bridge Village in Massachusetts, Massachu-setts, announced that the award was made "for undertaking under-taking the restoration of a century-old building in a state where icw such efforts are made." Believed to be the oldest original home standing south of Salt Lake City, the structure struc-ture was built of sun-dried adobes on 100 South Street in Parowan in 1856-57. Its builder build-er was 22-year-old Jesse N. Smith, a Utah pioneer of 1847 and youngest cousin of Joseph Smith, first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-ter-dav Saints. He came to Parowan in 1851 with the original band of pioneers pi-oneers to this valley. The restoration project was ' undertaken by the pioneer's descendants in 1967, headed by Don Mack Dalton, Pleasant Grove. Finding the 8-room home in danger of collapse, they donated $11,500 to brace its east wall, repair the roof and restore to original condition condi-tion its interior woodwork and five 'fireplaces. Dr. Everett L. Cooley of the Utah State Historical Society is the state chairman for the national association, which each year searches out for recognition rec-ognition state and local projects pro-jects which show high quality quali-ty achievement within its geographical ge-ographical regions. The National Society of the jSons of Utah Pioneers, which I has chapters in both Parowan ' and Cedar City, has provided a bronze plaque which has been placed on the front wall of the Smith home. Harold H. Smith, Heber City, is the new president of the Smith Family group, and Moroni W. Smith, a former Parowan resident, is treasur. er. |
