Show Flawless performances rendered by the Eastman Brass Quintet Take five brass instruments played by five fine musicians dedicated to the single-minded purpose of creating good I music an you have the musically musi-cally compatable ensemble which played for Music Arts patrons last Thursday. Theirs was undoubtedly the most flawless performance on brass instruments ever witnessed by this writer. Enthusiastic listeners list-eners acknowledged the excellence ex-cellence of the Eastman Brass Quintet by demanding two encores which proved to be a high point of the evening concert. Bach's "Contrapuntal No. 9" from "The Art of the Fugue" amply demonstrated the virtuosity of the individual individ-ual players, while the second ncore, "Salutation" by Jack End, closed the performance with a humorous touch of the contemporary. The Quintet, having played to a larger-than-ordinary audience on Thursday even ing, compounded their coup by attracting over 200 SUSC students to a brass instrument instru-ment clinic the following morning. Dalby fielding a variety var-iety of questions from 1 he students, they also again proved their unique linear and vertical musical balance, giving the impression that there were not five different people playing five different instruments, but five instru- j ments being played by one , person. The students demon- trated their appreciation by a standing ovation at the end of the clinic. The Eastman Brass Quintet has made one record under the Vox-Candide label, entitled en-titled "German and English Renaissance Brass Music." I The next concert of the Music Arts will take place on Monday, March 9. w'len Scheenfeld-Daniel String Trio will appear in the final pro- . gram of this season. I |
