' UTAH STATE DEPARTMENT x'::.':, :-:(-y OF HIGHWAYS NEW DESIGN FOR HIGHWAY 91. This is the architect's conception of the Interstate-15 bypass through Cedar City as last proposed by the Utah State Highway Department. U. S. Highway 91 has $30,000 pro-, grammed in 1966 for acquisition of right's-of-way and in 1968 $400,000 is programmed for construction. Interstate Highway-15 through Cedar City has $3.5 million programmed for fiscal 1966. A most important public hearing hear-ing on improvements to U. S. Highway 'JL through Cedar City and connections with Interstate 15 will be conducted by the State Highway Department in Cedar City at 7:30 p. in. tonight, Thursday, Thurs-day, February 17 in the Fish and Game Building on North Main Street. Anyone interested in the highway high-way program is invited to attend the hearing. The highway department has programmed $30,000 for right-of-way purchases this year required to widen the 4.5 miles of highway high-way from the junction with 1-15 southwest of the city to the city limits and from the north city limits to the junction some distance dis-tance north of the city to four lanes. Limited Access It has also scheduled construction con-struction of improvements, including in-cluding limited control access on the sections outside the limits of the city. These improvements are exepcted to cost approximately $100,000, and are scheduled for construction in fiscal 1968, presumably pre-sumably after Interstate 15 through Cedar City at 1400 West has been completed. It is understood the construe-, tion of 1-15 from the south limits of Cedar City to the interchange north of the city will be undertaken under-taken during the curenj , fiscal year, at an estimated cost of $3.5 million. Right-of-way purchases through Cedar City have been underway for some time, with a number of homes removed from the area, or under the process of being removed. Originally Proposed It has been rumored that plans of the highway commission call for the erection of a fence on either side of highway 91 for the 4.5 miles between the two interchanges inter-changes and the city limits proper prop-er as a means of access control. However, it has also been indicated indi-cated that this control may be effected by the installation of curb and gutter along these two sections of highway. These and other matters were discussed with interested groups recently when the commission held a meeting in Cedar City and then met with interested delegations delega-tions and private citizens whose property and businesses may be affected by the access control. These matters will again be aired at the hearing tonight, together with all other phases of the program pro-gram as it deals with traffic flow into Cedar City from the freeway. Notice Refers to Fencing The fencing has been mentioned mention-ed frequently, and is referred to in the official notice of the hearing hear-ing published for the past three weeks, and will probably be considered con-sidered or at least discussed tonight. to-night. However, McRay Cloward, head of the local Democratic party organization states that "there will be no fencing," indicating indi-cating that some other type of control will be decided on. Although no public announcement announce-ment has been made as to exactly ex-actly when bids for construction of the freeway through Cedar City will be called for, it is understood un-derstood the bid call will be published in the near future. Also Al-so it is expected that work on the section of freeway from Hamilton's Ham-ilton's Fort to Cedar City will resume re-sume as soon as weather conditions condi-tions permit, and be completed on schedule. |
