" " " " Iron County Fair continues to grow and Labor Day, devoted to honoring "Cedar City" was particularly par-ticularly outstanding this year with the parade of some 70 floats and three bands, plus four riding rid-ing organizations, highlighting the day's activities. String of cars "as far as the eye could see" made the trek to Parowan Monday morning to either participate In or view the activities of the day. Huge Iron County Fair parade captivated the largest audience ever to witness wit-ness a parade In Parowan, ac-corah?i ac-corah?i to general chairman, A.nasa Stones. Large cash prizes were awarded award-ed the winners and the Cedar Fourth LDS Ward walked off with top honors of the day. Float was entitled "Death on the Trail," and featured a scene from a handcart trek across the plains to Utah. Second place honors In the parade competition went to a float honoring the newest states Hawaii and Alaska entered by the Cedar LDS First Wnrd. A tw Tor third place honors was ad-Judged ad-Judged between the float entered enter-ed by College of Southern Utah Utah and Southern Utah Dairy of Parowan. In the comedy division a float entered by the Cedar Jaycees won first place honors and a tie for second with the Parowan Trl-H Club bathers and the Parowan Chamber of Commerce "Whistlers". "Whist-lers". Horse racing and rodeo events both Saturday and Monday afternoon after-noon also attracted large crowds. Iron Rangers of Cedwr City sponsored spon-sored the rodeo activities and the Parowan Chamber of Commerce was In charge of the races. Iron Rangers also promoted a Pony Express contest Monday morning and riding groups from the area participated in this contest. The 22-mile relay race from Cedar City to Parowan was won by the St George riding club. They traversed the distance In one hour and eight minutes. Exhibits at the Parowan High School were swamped by viewers Labor Day following the parade and prior to afternoon entertainment entertain-ment events. All in all the 1959 Iron County Fair proved to be one of the most successful and drew more county-wide participation than any staged in the past Stones stated. The Fair Board, he continued, is attempting to make the Fair a county event and this year's activities ac-tivities were certainly a step In that direction, he concluded. |
