Show $49,879,000 Tax Bite Taken from Utah Motorists Dirizg 1959 Utah Motorists paid 119,879,000 in state and federal gasoline and other automotive levies last year, it was disclosed today. J. C. Williams, local chairman of the Utah Petroleum Council Coun-cil said the biggest bite was placed on the motorist in the form of the gasoline tax. Utah took in $19,625,000 from this source in 1959 and Uncle Sam realized $9,473,000. The rest of the revenue came from a variety of levies, including includ-ing registration fees, taxes on new cars, parts and accessories, imports on lubricating oil and other sales and excise taxes. Utah imposes a 6 cent-a-gal-lon tax on gasoline and the US government has a 4 cent levy-Nationally, levy-Nationally, the state and federal fed-eral governments took in more than $9.5 billion last year from special taxes Imposed on the motorist, Mr. William noted. Some $1.6 billion of the federal tax revenue alone was directed to non-highway spending, he said. "The already staggering size of the motorist's tax burden makes it impeiative that gasoline gaso-line taxes go no higher, Mr. Williams Wil-liams declared. "The fourth cent of the current federal levy is slated to expire next June 30 and it Is essential that it do so. The motorist is hit hard enough already." |
