Show St. George Teams Win First, Second In Southern Utah Women's Tourney The Rocky Mountain Service women's softball team walked away with first place In the Southern Utah Women's Softball tournament held in Cedar City this past week. Rocky Mountain downed the best of 12 teams collected for the biggest tournament held in the history of the annual affair. In the championship game, the fourth game of the tourney for them, they downed the St. George Sixth ward 10 to 6 in a hard fought contest. The outstanding player of the tournament, picked by the judges, was the short stop for the St. George Sixth ward, Janice Graff. In the championship game she fielded seven balls, five assists as-sists and two flies without an error and knocked out a triple to score two of the six runs scored by her team. In the three games I played she collected six hits in 10 trips to the plate for a .600 tournament batting average. Thornton Drug won the trophy for displaying the most outstanding outstand-ing team sportsmanship. Drawing Draw-ing a bye in the first round this team won its way into the final night, beating Hunter Hardware. Playing a losing battle against the tournament winners in the semil-finals the team showed outstanding sportsmanship by conceding the game after three innings rather than forcing the St. George team to play the full limit, when it had to play the championship game immediately following. Rocky Mountain victories were scored over Peoples Market of Cedar City in the opening night of play 17 to 0. Ruth Esplin, pitching, allowed only one hit in the shut out game. The second evening saw the victors barely edge out a strong Endsley team from Cedar 3 to 2 in the lowest scoring game of the tournament. In the semi-final round on the final night Rocky . Mountain downed Thornton Drug In a onesided one-sided affair 22 to 1 putting it In the finals. The St. George Sixth ward reached the finals by downing two of Cedar City's strongest teams, Milt's Circus Lounge and Biederman Hereford Ranch. Drawing a bye in the first round of play this team met Milt's Lounge the second evening of the tourney and downed that team 14 to 7, immediately getting get-ting Into the semi-finals. The final fi-nal night saw this team down Biederman's Ranch 11 to 2 to go up against Rocky Mountain for the championship. Other games of the tournament tourna-ment pitted Hunter Hardware against Milford in the opening game of the tourney. Hunters won out 17 to 16 in the only extra ex-tra inning game of the meet. Milt's Lounge downed a strong Minersville team the opening night 10 to 4, and Biederman's playing the . nightcap got into the second round of play by beating Pioche 13 to 2 in a onesided one-sided affair. Biederman's won its way into the semifinals by beating out a second Milford team 15 to 6 in the second evening of the tourney, tour-ney, while Thornton's won its way into the final night by downing another Cedar team, Hunter Hardware, 9 to 4. Biederman, president of the Cedar City Women's soft-ball soft-ball association, and Mrs. Gam Hirschi, secretary of the organization, organi-zation, extend their appreciation to all of those who-helped in making the tournament a success suc-cess and to the out-of-town teams for coming in to make the tourney the best in the three years it has been running. |
