Show Local Iron Mines Wait out Wage Disputes Although the general steel strike throughout the nation was settled last Friday and workers have been returning to their Jobs during the week, the strike of Cedar City iron ore miners has not been settled and the mines west of Cedar City are still idle. When the local miners went out on strike shortly after the general steel strike was called, the company employees not only voted to support the steel strike, but to demand final settlement of a local issue as well. The local lo-cal Issue, although it is being worked on, has not been settled, and consequently the miners have not returned to their jobs. As far as we are able to ascertain as-certain there is no prospect of immediate settlement of the local lo-cal Issue.. However, there should not be much delay, now that the general contract questions have been settled. The employees of the mining companies operating in Iron county have asked for an 8M1C hourly pay raise retroactive to Dec. 1, 1950, under a Job reclassification reclas-sification agreement, which they claim has never been paid. The fact that the ore miners have not returned to work has had no immediate effect on the re-opening of the Geneva plant. However, if the men stay away from their jobs for any length of time most activity at Geneva will end, because the plant can't operate without ore from Iron county. |
