Show Cedar City Study Group Completes 1100 Mile Tour Of Historic Sites Headed by Dr. R?ed Farnswonlv a local history study group has juit ' completed an 1100 mile tour of southern Utah. The tour was in tle nature of a field trip In relation to the winter's study. In addition to Dr. Famsworth the party incluu-ed incluu-ed Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Grover of radio station KSUB, Director and Mrs. Gustive O. Larson of the LDS Institute, Dr. and Mrs. Frank Petty, Mr. and Mrs. Theron Ashcroit and Mr. and Mrs. Twain Tlppetts of the Branch college The tour was enriched by visits to scenic centers lying en route to the historic spots. These included the Wayne Wonderlands, the Arches National Monument and Dead Hone Point near Moab, the Natural Brlu-ges Brlu-ges National Monument, the famoiu Goosenecks and Monument Vail.-y in an Juan county, and Arizona. Also visits among the Paiutes, Nu-vajos Nu-vajos and Hopi tribes proved highly interesting. The group followed the Old Spanish Span-ish Trail from Cedar City to Green River, Moab and Monticello. Then tiie party continued to Blanditig where Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lyman, missionaries to the Indians, Introduced Intro-duced the visitors to the native tribes in the afternoon and reviewed local aspects of the original 5ar. Visits to Bluff and contacts with the "Hole in the Reck" trails gave color to his story Returning home through Tuba City and tiie Hopl Village of Moan-copi, Moan-copi, the study group turned up the Colorado river to visit Lee's Ferry where Jeremiah Johnson, son of John D. Lee's associate, revlewcu the LDS miss'en at that point. Then the tour led through House Rock valley, Kanab, Pipe Springs, Short Creek and Hie old pioneer route across the mountains Into the Zicn Canyon area at Rockville. When the tour was completed the group had traversed most of the outer fringe of Mormon defenses on the south and had touched most of the forts and stations used by tiieni In their thrusts into Arizona and New Mexico areas. They had followed follow-ed and crossed a number of eai'.j native Spanish and Mormcn trails. Colored photographic records and historical notes were accumulated to be reviewed in the study dub and for public use as required. |
