Show Colorado River Expedition Slated for June 5 Due to an insufficient number of applications, the first of two Colorado River Explorer expeditions expedi-tions was cancelled this week, according to John L. Cross, local Field Scout executive and veteran veter-an river guide. Plans now call for one expedition expe-dition from June 5 to June 15. Thirty-eight persons will make the 167 mile journey down the famed river from the mouth of the North Wash to Lee's Ferry, Arizona. Guiding the expedition will be Mr. Cross, who has led 10 expeditions expe-ditions down the river including jver 400 persons without a single sin-gle accident. Safety factors are stressed in these scout expeditions, according accord-ing to Mr. Cross, and every possible pos-sible occurence is anticipated by lour years of experiments and planning. This has led to the use of lt-man lt-man neoprene, army assault boats. These crafts were made for landing operations in the South Pacific, and were designed to overcome- the dangers from coral reefs and gunfire. The boats are inflated in eight separate compartments, ony one of which will maintain the craft on the surface. In addition, a medical doctor will accompany the party down the river. Life jackets are worn on the river at all times, and other equipment Includes: two, 21-unit first aid kits, two emergency emer-gency repair kits, and one ring buoy with a tiO foot line for every boat. Application for registration on the trip may be made at the Sectional Scout office In Cedar City, or at the Council office in Provo. Approximate cost of the trip will be $30 for each person and includes all transportation and the use of boats and the equipment. |
