Show Chain Store Staff Pledges Aid In Victory Drive Cedar City's chain store employees employ-ees served up some bad news for Hitler Hirorito & Company this week when they added their names to a pledge, already signed by hundreds hun-dreds of men and women behind the counters of chain stores from St. George to Logan, assuring Uncle Un-cle Sam of their all-out cooiera-tlon cooiera-tlon in the wartime emergency. The pledge eventually will carry Um signatures of more than 2,500 Utah chain store workers and will be sent to Donald M. Nelson, A-merlca's A-merlca's war production chief, as an evidence of the patriotic spirit of the people who are supplying civilian needs on the home front, according to Plorn Williams, chairman chair-man of the Cedar City chain s'ore community majnagers' committee. The pledge was originated recently re-cently In Salt Lake City by Harry L. Hoagland. J. C. Penney Company Com-pany executive and president of the Utah Chain Stores Association, following an appeal by Secretary of the Treasury Morgenthau for an Intensification of retailers' efforts In the sale of war savings it amps and bonds. "No more patriotic group can be found anywhere than the loyal Utah cltlaena employed In the chain stores of the state," Mr. Hoagland said, "As suiters In the army of supply, all or them are doing their utmost to expedite the Victory drive and, at the same time, uphold the high living standards of Utah consumers." The pledge assures Mr. Nelson that Utah's chain store personnel will "continue to work wholeheartedly wholeheart-edly in all state and federal war projects In which their facilities can be of assistance, maintain an aggressive effort In the sale of war stamps and bonds, strive to serve consumers at home by maintaining the flow ol necessities needed for civilian welfare and morale, keep retail prices at the lowest possible level, strive further to eliminate every unnecessary distribution w,t, cooperate with Utah agricultural and other producers In developing new and better markets for Utah products In Utah and other states, furnish assistance and Information to all persons Interested In distribution distri-bution and Its problems and assist managers of Utah's chain stores In each community to continue Intensively In-tensively their cooperation with civilian defense, civic and charitable charit-able activities." |
