Show Let's Have a Program (By Jack ChrLstensen) (Editor's Note: The following article written by John S. Chrlsten-sen, Chrlsten-sen, member of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce Recreation committee, was contributed as a result re-sult of our kAiitoilal, "Is Cedar Ci'y Losing Ground," published in th last Issue of the Record) vr Careful consideration and plenty thoughtful discussion should be given the matter of making any public improvement, or In spending public money whether It be from taxes or donations. However, after that, some definite action should be taken If the project Is really needed and altogether worth-while. If you want to "go places" you have to start out in some direction, not Just mill-around constantly. Over the past two years we have appointed many committees, held lots of meetings, done considerable talking; yet none of the many needed need-ed Improvements considered, are doflthuitely underway. Our committees, com-mittees, clubs, councils and differcn organizations seem to lack purpose Ideas, courage and the wlll-to-do It Is to be hoped Cedar has not lost the civic Interest and ambitions it has been noted for. To any of J you; In thinking over the activities of your organization, or your club.J or jour committee over the past few years; Just what. In a civic way. have you accomplished You have no doubt talked considerable, but what about to what purpose. Have you( really spent most of your time spoofing each other and feeling lm-( portant, or Just posing, or doodling-jn-paper. or buck-passing, or what? Of course In contemplating some of the things we have failed to do during said period, we must take Into consideration the labor situation. situa-tion. No doubt after more of our ser vice men come home we can get to-going, but definite preliminary plans should be made now. If some 1 of our present officials and otherji leaders would produce a carefully 1 planned program for the proper up- i keep of what we have, and for making of other much needed plans and Improvements, it would be Interesting In-teresting to read about it. We have the sunshine, as a first class element the year around. Our location Is unique, between Salt Lake and Los Angeles on the best all year round route to the west coast. We are at the gateway to the scenic attractions of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona and just above all the semi-tropical country of Dixie and Southern Nevada. Ne-vada. We have splendid summer and winter range with well bred livestock, live-stock, rich soil In our valleys and a reasonable amount of mir'ace and under-ground water. We have Iron coal and other natural resources nearby. We have reliable business establishments, good public schools,' a first class State College, progressive progres-sive churches, and upto-date county coun-ty hospital, an enlarged and improved im-proved water sjstem, ample hotel facilities, lots of good-looking well-kept well-kept homes, a lovely swimming pool, a large modern airport with considerable con-siderable hanger fpace; our moun-talas, moun-talas, streams and lukes are wonderful wonder-ful for scenery, recreation and. rest, and for fishing, hunting and other sports. But to prove we are still reasonably reason-ably progressive, to be conslstant with the above Improvements and natural resources, to make our town a more desirable place to live, there are some improvements we should definitely plan to make, and soon We must have better streets, sidewalks side-walks and crossings with proper equipment to take care of same. We need badly a modern state highway here Instead of this trail we call 91. We should have cleaner backyards, back-yards, far less dust, the elimination of files. We should have a large well-planned, substantially built Civic Center as a live memorial to our returning Service men and Elrls. The main features In which should be a large, beautiful, well decorated and mirrored dance hall. One which could be largely opened up In summer and closed In winter. win-ter. The other main feature, a lovely love-ly well appropriated, lighted and nsulated Library hall. Minor feature 1 could be; club rooms, game rooms a kitchen, shower, etc. Soon we should have a hugh "Field House" I for tournaments and all indoor meets, games exeocise and play. I We should have a race track and rodeo grounds second to none a good golf course and a baseball diamond. dia-mond. We should work for and in-' in-' sist on the very best in all our different dif-ferent forms of entertainment; such as, dances, movies, programs, games 1 radio reception. We should take a 1 definite Interest in having the Federal Fed-eral Government give our local Indians In-dians proper care, training, housing, hous-ing, education. Our City and School property within town could nicely be parked and lighted Including the ! B. A. C. Campus, Well no doubt some of you have thought of other things we should work for, but surely the above sug-j gestions are enough to get started on, and we Fhould seriously consider con-sider "What Are We Waiting For?', The closing event of the Second Ward Primary will be held next Tuesday evening, August 7, at eight o.clock in the Ward Recreation halL there will be a program followed Ly an exhibit of the children's work and alro a bazaar.
