Show Government Waste Another example of ridiculous government waste was brought to the attenitlon of the people of the United States this week when the veterans bureau plan for building a number of veteran hospitals in the next few years, while at the same time the government had announced announc-ed that some 60 army hospitals, built at a cost of $500,000,000 or more, are to be abandoned. It was anonunced that a 500 bed hospital is to be built in Salt Lake City, and plans are apparently going forward in the hopes that construction con-struction can start soon. It is also undestood that the Bushnell home at Brigham City, built at a cost of approximately $12,000,000 and recognized re-cognized as one of finest in the entire en-tire country, is to be abandoned. Everyone wants the veterans of :he war to receive the very best care possible to give, but their Is absolutely no Justification for closing clos-ing down Bushnell and building mother one at Salt Lake City, only about sixty miles distant, and it Is :ime the people revolted against -uch duplication and waste. The cost of building a 500 bed lospltal at Salt Lake City would irovide much medical treatment :or veterans at Bushnell. The rea-ion rea-ion advanced that the new hospital hospi-tal would be closer to the medical ichool at the University of Utah, eems to be a rather fllsmy ex- :use for the program. Bushnell certainly can provi '.e verythlng for the veteran that a hospital in Salt Lake could, and the money saved could be used to ?ood advantage in providing homes 'or returning servicemen, or in numerous other ways. We repeat that if our government govern-ment officials and bureau heads lo not use enough common sense to avoid such useless waste, the 'eople rise up and demand that something be done to put a stop 'o such foolish duplication. |
