Show REPUBLICAN LEADERS WILL CUT PAY ROLLS Legislators Hope to Realize Material Ma-terial Decrease After The Census is Taken. Washington, Jan. 14,- With an in crease of 90,000 employees to assist in taking the 1920 census, the pros pect for materially reducing the en ormous government pay-roll which is the aim of Congress, becomes temporarily tem-porarily dim. Both the House and Senate have made consistent efforts, under the Republican management, to bring about a diminuition of this great drain upon the public funds, despite de-spite the efforts of the adniinistra tion to keep in operation many of the emergency bureaus growing out of the war. Under Senator Smoot's relentless criticism of the enormous personnel of the War Risk Bureau, its pay-roll has been considerably reduced, and the director hes recently announced that he intends to make further large reductions. The actual task of taking tha census of the United States, which is now under way, will consume not more than two weeks, and with this completed a large proportion of the 90,000 employees doubtless can be dispensed with. With the actual completion of the great task, it is hoped that the government pay-roll will rapidly assume normal economical econom-ical proportions. |
