H WAR ACTIVITIES HAVE H BUM IMPORTANT PART H Many Improvements Both in Matter BBVJ of Equipment and Methods of In- BVH strurtion Plans for the Future. BBH BBB1 The war has affected us all. The BBBj schools must feel its influence. The BBV effects have been partly good and BBBJ partly bad. When the pull of the in- BBV dustries is as strong as at present the BBV bad effects of pupils leaving school BJ are to be seen. Early in the year the BB nation sent out a danger signal to BBY I avoid a social catastrophe the call BBY for "Schools as usual." We have tried BBB to obey this call and by using some BBB Saturdays for school, thus closing a BBB j little earlier in the spring we have succeeded quite well in holding pupils BBB j in school. In fact our percentage of I pupils remaining until the end is very BBB I high, about it.'t.H'', in the junior high BBB j schools and 9& in the grades. BBB The war has required us to teach BBB patriotism the "Lessons in Commun- BBH ity Life" published by the Govern- H ment have been taught in every BBB school. J' WORK OF IRON COUNTY SCHOOLS (Continued from paec one) help should have made it possible t do more close follow-up work with t the teachers in nil the crades but con- siderahle outside work on school problems prob-lems made this help less for the teachers of the grammar grades thaa Inst year. Three special problems have bees undertaken in the supervision work this year. The first is nn nttempt to localize for the pupils the individual eK problems in the mechanics of number work in which each pupil is failing. Drill can then be uriven each pupil cm the particular part of the work ia which the pupil is weak. For this purpose blanks were furnished the teachers for recording each month the addition and multiplication facts that each pupil did not know at the regular monthly test. This record sheet is considered as an assignment for the next month. Teachers reported thin as a helpful device where followed up closely. The second problem undertaken under-taken was making spelling practical. For the little words most used and often misspelled the Ayer's Spelling list was used. This contains one thousand words. In addition to this list children should learn to spell first the words they must use in writing about their environment. Teacher were asked to hand in a list of words the pupils of each school should all master and the grade in which pupils should master each word. These lists were compiled and carefully grnded so that they furnished a minimum list of words in the spelling of which pupils should never make a mistake. This ideal was not reached, but much improvement shown. For example, such words ns "through" and "corral" ure usel by pupils in the intermediate grades and were migpelled continually. continu-ally. Kvery boy and girl in Irvi county should know these words. Over ninety per cent of the pupils in the fifth and sixth grades spelled these words correctly this spring. The "Individual "In-dividual Problem Sheets" were also used in spelling. 'The third problem was in measuring and testing results. The Courtis Standard Arithmetic tests were relented re-lented with the results that show improvement. im-provement. The Primary Supervisor of the county worked out a series of tests for the second and third grade which will enable us to measure and compare the work in those grades: We again wish to express appreciation apprecia-tion for the attitude the teachers have taken toward the work of the supervision super-vision and hope that a spirit of cooperation co-operation and mutual helpfulness will continue. The plan of organization of one room schools tried out last year in a few schools and adopted this year ia all of these small places has bees successful enough to receive the approval ap-proval of the State authorities and has been adopted and recommended by them for all such schools in the state. vVe have hud the pleasure of learning, through our work on the Course of Study comimssion, that our local course of study has been very close to that adopted as this Commission Commis-sion as beBt. Teachers in Iron County will not therefore need to make any very great readjustments. Teachers. The work of the teachers has beesi good in most cases, although some changes were necessary this spring. From the higheet school official in the state on his visit to the schools came the remark, "A good corps of teachers." teach-ers." Fifty-two teachers have been employed em-ployed this year for fifty teaching positions. po-sitions.
