Show OIL FOR ROAD IMPROVEMENT When Properly Applied Good Surface la Obtained Experiments Being Made in Missouri. ! (By E. T. MTAtT8TT.ANr). Missouri A- , rlcultural Collfge.) Attempts are now being made In several parts of tho state to keep dust down by the uc.e of road oils. Supervisors Super-visors should be enreful to Investigate the quality of oil they use before putting put-ting It on the highways. " It Is not generally gen-erally understood that there are two : distinct types of oil on the market. One of these oils has an asphalt base which serves as a binder on the road ns soon as the lighter oil evaporates, The other has a piiraflln base and is to all Intents and purposes a lubricating lubricat-ing oil. This kind of oil, however, doe not hold the road hard, or Is not binding. bind-ing. It leaves the roads musty and sticky. Howl oiling, properly done, gives a good surface. The City of Joplln has done some of this work on its roads that have already eurrled heavy truffle truf-fle more than a year anil now look aj good as asphalt pavement. Any Missouriiin may send samples of road oils to the Engineering Experiment Experi-ment Station University of Missouri, Columbia, and have them examined at .'MsKt "" Jf ",UH |
