Show I UTAH ENTERS DRV COLUMN I AUGUST 1. marks an important epoch in the his B lory of Utah, for on that date our state entered B the ranks of those sister states who are doing their B part towards tlie elimination of one of the greatest B " curses of the civilized world today, that of intempcr- H ance. It is the date on which the statewide prohibi- B tion law enacted by the last state legislature became B effective. Its entry was royally kept and celebrated fl by thOM to whom the abolition of liquor will mean H a sacrifice on their part, and will doubtless be fol- B lowed by a lingering leave-taking of Dear Harlcy- B Corn, for it is understood that it will be the aim of I peace officers to give reasonable time for the new con- B ditioru to adjust themselves, and for caches in private B OtflafS, etc., to become exhausted. The advocates of B prohibition are content to bide their time so long as H progress is being made in the right direction, rcaliz- B ing that the change in many places and nffecting a H great many people is going to be a radical one. But B under the new dry law, there seems to be no loop B holes, and without a doubt, whiskey has got to go. B Under the new law, physicians are relieved of the B responsibility of writing prescriptions for medicinal B purposes, the obligation being transferred to the jus- B tices of the peace, who upon a proper affidavit being I executed will have the authority to legalic the sale B of four ounces per week to persons in need of alco- B holic stimulant. It is now unlawful for any person B not licensed as a dealer to have more than sixteen B ounces of any alcoholic beverage in their possession. B Near beer now contains too high a percentage of al- B cohol to be sold under the provisions of the new law, B which fixes the maximum amount of alcohol that may fl be contained in any beverage offered for sale at one- B half of one per cent. H No one having a knowledge of human nature ex- B pects that the new law is going to be an absolute cure B for the drink evil. Wavs will unquestionably be B found of eluding the eyes of the law, but the means B that will be resorted to will be too tedious and haz- B ardous for the average person, and it is going to be B decidedly difficult to obtain intozicants hereafter. B The difference in a place like Cedar City and the B balance of Iron county, will not be very noticable or B felt ; but in towns and cities that have been licensing B the open saloon, it will be hard to get adjusted to the B new condition. That is why a little season of com- B parativc liberality in the enforcement of the law will B be allowed, until the present supply stored away in B dark cellars shall have been exhausted. |
