Show TAFF RECEIVES IHATffl Is Chosen by the Republican National sil Convention on (lie First llallotff H Sherman for Vice President. fll MANY lIliUKi AILS KI:l LSI; TO VOTE H Leading Supporters of tho IH Colonel In Convention Will HsBfl Not Bolt the Ticket. President William Howard H Taft is the candidate of the Re,- s jH publican party for president. He H was nominated on the first ballot H shortly before 10:30 Saturday H night, at tho colse of one of tho H most exciting and turbulent con- H ventions ever witnessed. H When Ex-President Roosevelt H realized that he was defeated H and that to have his name pre- jH sented to tho convention would H be useless, he requested his fol- H lowers in the convention to re- H frain from voting. A majority jH of the delegates did as requested H but a number cast their votes, H some for other candidates and H some for the colonel. H The first and only ballot for H (president -was as follows: Tafly"-' i-.j, H $8X;rgoiovolV 107; LaFollotte, i'Si, .4 fH buhl, z; present Ami 'iJwfr7KesisHmmmm 848. 'H Likewise, the first was the on- ll ly ballot for vice-president, and W resulted as follows: Sherman, M 507; Borah, 21; Mcrriman, 20; ' Had ley, 14; Bevcridgc, 2; Gil- 'H lette, 1; absent, 71; not voting, fl Within nti hour after the rog- W ular convention had nominatod m Taft, a rump convention of jH Roosevelt supporters convened m in Orchestra hall and nominated, m the colonel for president and m made tentative plans for a new m pai'ty to be called the National W Progressive Party. W A bolt b Roosevelt and his W supporters had been threatened W t hroughout the convention should W Taft be nominated, and the ac- H lion taken was no surprise. H However, the weakness of the H movement was the cause of H much surprise and comment. Al- H most every prominent Republi- jH can who had been actively en- H gaged in leading the fight for ' H Roosevelt, refused to join the H bolting clement. H Of the leaders who supported H the colonel, Governor Iladley pf H Missouri, Governor Deneen of H Illinois and Senator Borah of H Idaho, have declared their inten- jW tion to support the regular Re- H publican ticket. Governor Had- H ley says the platform is the most M progressive ever adopted by the H party and one which all Republi- H cans may consistently support. M The fact remains, hovover, in , H spite of the declarations of these H former ardent friends of Rooae- M velt, that the Republican party H is in serious straits, being more jfl nearly demoralized than ut any H time since the civil war. If the fl Democrats put forth the right M man, they will stand an excellent M show to elect their ticket; in H fact the prospects for Domocrat- H ic success were never brighter H than at the present time. |
