I It was specified in the notice 1 that the money was to be depos- 1 ited on Thursday night at a spot near the Bear river bridge south- !' west of town, designated by a red lantern. Olson notified Marshal Hansen and turned over to him the no- tice of blackmail. Hansen ob tained a horse from the shearing corrals and started for the place indicated in the bandits' note. Nearing the spot, about 10 I o'clock Thursday night, Hansen saw, in the darkness, a man creeping on all fours. "Who are you?" demanded Hansen. The reply to this was a shot. The bullet struck Hansen in the side. With the report of the shot, Hansen's horse wheeled about, and a second bullet pierced the animal's heart, killing it instantly. instant-ly. Hansen also fired a shot in the direction of whence his assailant's assail-ant's shots had come. The bullet which struck Hansen Han-sen entered between the sixth and seventh ribs, ranging upward up-ward and to the left. Two hours later Hansen was discovered in the road by an automobile au-tomobile party. Among the occupants oc-cupants of the automobile was Sheriff Ward of Uinta county. Dalton was arrested and, over the dead body of Hansen, confessed con-fessed to the extent that it was the Whitney brothers who attacked at-tacked Hansen.
