Show I CORONATION CEREMONIES. Beautiful Ceremony. Last Sunday I I . Evening at St. Mary's Cathedral. Over 100 children took part in the annual an-nual coronation ceremony at St. Mary's j cathedral last Sunday evening and the e(1'flce was crowded with an interested , and edified congregation. After the i rosary and litany the coronation serv-jces serv-jces began.. The children first sang a hymn to the Blessed Virgin, sweet-voiced sweet-voiced Clara Fafek being the soloist. Little Mary Halloran then read the Act of Consecration in a distinct voice, iha children then started around the church, head-? 1 by the bearers of the Blessed Virgin's banner. Mercv Edwards, Ed-wards, Ethel Btrkhoff and Grace Geary. On reaching the altar, Marie Hughes mounted the ladder-leading up to the statue ind placed a beautiful crown of carnations ,nd roses on the Blessed Mother's head. She was followed fol-lowed by tiny Florence Collins, who placed a similar wrtath on the head of the Infant Jesus. Marie Hughes, the crowner, was attended by her littie sisters. Helen j.nd Alice Hughes, who made gracefully pretty maids of honor. hon-or. Miss Cassandra Wood was a graceful crown bearer. Florence Collins Col-lins made a lovely little crowner an 1 was attended by Florence Halloran and ; Margaret Collins, while Lydia White I was the pretty crown bearer. The Sacred Sa-cred Heart banner was borne by John-O'Connor, John-O'Connor, assisted by John Sloan, Harvey Har-vey Brennan and Daniel Armstrong. The music was of a high order, a special spe-cial feature being an -'Ave Maria," beautifully rendered by Miss Owen. ' Mrs. G. E. Curtis and Mr. Al White-j White-j man of the cathedral choir. Mrs. Ed-: Ed-: ward McGurrin officiated at the organ. After the -oronation Rev. Father j Keenan delivered an eloquent sermon on the Blessed Virgin. He explained that the coronation ceremony was not a doctrine of the church, but was sane-j'tioned sane-j'tioned by the church. The children, who we're .emblematic of purity and innocence.'. , -il ways took part. The church sanctioned, devotion, to the Blessed Viigin and the saints.; .as they j are the highest of thte sanctified ones. ! but in crowning the Blessed Virgin I theyewere not. giving to her the honors J that belonged to C-od. The sermon was I a very interesting one, particularly for (the non-Catholics, 'many being present. After, the sermon, benediction of the j blessed sacrament was given by Bt. i Rev... Bishop Scanlan. and at its close the right reverend bishop spoke a few words to the congregation, . and also addressed he children.' His sermons to the .children are always beautiful, and even the smallest child listened with the closest attention. He touched on the ceremony as being typical of the great purity and sweetness of childhood, and of how the lives of parents par-ents and teachers should be examples for the young to follow. At the con- j elusion of the right reverend bishop's i sermon the little ones marched out of the church and the beautiful ceremony was over. Rev. Father. Kiely had charge of the children. He was assisted assist-ed by Miss McFadden. Miss Jones. Miss Buboltz, Miss Duguet, Miss Kennedy, Miss Lundquist and Michael Fitzgerald. |
