Show , j I Woman's World. 1 IZ'SJ. I Specially Prepared for Our Feminine Readers. I j HOW TO GROW TALLER. i J By Marion Martineau in Chicago Trib- j i une. j The tall girl is in style and the girl 1 j who Is short must add to her Inches. 'I Physical culture, beside making a i i, girl just slender enough and graceful, ' j, will also add a little to her height I You can hardly take a set of physical physi-cal culture lessons without becoming a little taller, and if you exercise in 1 . the right manner you will add not a . little, ?Tt considerable to your inches. I . ThereVrare different ways of making ? yourself taller, from a standpoint of I ; physical culture, and the easiest of all wava is mv taking a little off your l weight This adds to your apparent : j height If you are dumpy you will 1 look short, but if you are slender you I I will look tall. This Is a universal ; rule. 'i " The girl who is too fat for her $ height will always appear sawed off, : while the girl who is a little too slim I , will look a great deal taler than She i really is. You can only tell by meas- . ! ' uring her that she Is a short girl. The second way to make yourself i look tall is by lengthening your waist 1 line. The long walsted girl -will in- I -variably look taller than the girl who , is short waisted. When she is seated she will sit higher and when ,she : ' stands she will appear to be much j i i longer, and all because of that lovely j ; long waist line which gives her grace .j and height i '' AdcT an Inch to Your Height There are a great many short I women who make an. exceedingly I good appearance. They look taller t than they really are and they have I I the look of being exquisitely built It I : is all due to their perfect proportions. .?( They are not too fat for their height, j I and their waist line is long and slen- ":, j der, not too thick and too high. ;! I But the girl who is too short can ; actually add to her height not by sub- .i I terfuge, but by putting on an inch or f so. Vi. I To add an Inch to your height you H f must surely begin by getting a suit In 1 1 f which to exercise. A suit of pajamas I I makes a good exercise suit, and many ! v tA- a young woman puts on pajamas and I jt slippers, and doing her hair up loosely r ;r i on top of her head, gets out into gym- 1 ' 1 nasium for an hour's practice a day. y Gymnasium practice, it must be un- derstood, is hard work. And the worn- i- an who is employed, for the woman I who is exhausted nervously, there is '; ' an exercise which is prescribed by a I- J famous physician who makes a special- I t ty of teaching the girls of London the II secrets of true physical culture. "Put on your suit" says he, "and seat yourself where you can watch the I others practice. Do not try to do any- I thing yourself. Take off your corsets, I put on a well fitting suit, ease your ' - i feet with comfortable slippers, and K. i' braid your hair down your back. Sit I ; along the wall and watch. Insensibly , I I you will catch the spirit of exercise. 1 f Little by little you will enter into the j I feeling of the gymnasium hour and I ; before you know it you will be skip- t ping down the room for a little exer- . s else with the rest" The feet of the girl who is short are j ( usually lacking In springiness, espec- I ' ially if she be a stout girl. She must ) practice walking so as to get all the spring possible out of her ankles. She must move with a long", lithe, graceful i motion. For this she must practice rising and falling on the balls of the ; . feet J1 As you rise and fall extend your I arms upward, for this stretches the back, exercising It a little at the same time. I Back Must Be Stretched. I ! The short girl must practice stretch- i ing the back. This is absolutely neces- t ' t sary, but while stretching she must y v notl ift weghts for this is bad from a I" physical standpoint She must stand ? ' with one hand upon her hip, her feet flat upon the floor! Then, rising slight ly, she must throw the right arm far upward. Then she must reverse this motion, throwing the left arm far up-; up-; ward. She must keep on doing this j . alternately, first with one arm and " then with the other, until she feels as ' f : i though the muscles of the back were I l thoroughly relaxed. I There is a method of stretching the j body which begins with lying flat uopn a couch and reaching for a horizontal bar, which is held back of the head. The feet, meanwhile, are reaching for a bar which is six Inches below the tips of the toes. Finally, the patient manages to grasp the bar over the ' bead and to touch the bar with the w - t: tips of the toes. She repeats this Bix I I times. This exercise is, however, a II ' rigorous one and is not really advised I to any one except the girl with a frame like Iron, and even the girl of iron should do it in moderation. Swinging by the arms Is an excel-, excel-, lent kind of practice, but be careful i i that the weight is suported actually by the arms and wrists. If the arms : feel weak, drop from the bar at once, ! for the weight will come upon the muscles of the back and this Is in- ' ; . jurious. A good exercise for the girl who 13 hopelessly lacking in inches is that of i lifting herself by her arms and wrists ; and by the muscles of her shoulders. ; 1 This i3 not difficult if the young woman will do the work slowly and not all the first day. It will take about a week's practice, i The object in doing this is to re- 1 duce the fat which accumulates upon the shoulder blades. Another motion for the girl who would grow a little taller is an ab dominal motion. She must learn to breathe deeply and with all of the I , lungs., the chest and the abdomen. If .. she breathes in little pants she will ! , x i I find that she does not feel well. The x I j short girl who will breathe deeply will I find that she develops her lungs and j carries her chest higher. This raises I )'y her quite a little. If you doubt this I j? ' - ;!M :'? ! stand under a cross beam. Stand naturally nat-urally without effort. Straighten yourself your-self up by taking a full breath, expanding ex-panding your chest as' far as you' can. Lift your head, breathe a full deep breath, raising the chest and drawing in the abdomen. And as you 'do so you will find that you actually grow from a quarter of an inch to an inch in height. Deep Breathing Essential. If the delicate girl who . wants to breathe deeply, and who is anxious to add to her inches at the same time will begin by holding her chin, high she will find that the battle is more than half won. good. Begin by stretching in the morning before you rise. Stretch again during the day and' again at night Stretch all you can. There are vigorous exercises that are advised for the girl who waDts to add to her height. But these are apt to do more harm than good. One must exercise with more discretion than zeal or the results "will be disastrous. A lame back, an aching set of limbs, and a stiff neck will follow the girl who does not put on common sense along with her gymnasium suit But if she will exercise rightly and prettily she will add to her inches and bo stronger in every way. |
