Show RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE. A movement has been started in St. j Lcuis by the Knights of Father j Mathew to erect a statue to Father Mathew in Forest park. St. Louis, to j be unveiled in August of the World's fair year, when the convention of the Catholic Total Abstinence union will be assembled in that city. A New York priest, returned from Rome, tells how Pope Leo XIII hears the news of the world every day without with-out reading a newspaper. He reads a journal published in the Vatican or has a secretary read it t him. Miss Mary Waite has been received into the Catholic church by the Rev. J. T. O'Connell, pastor of St. Francis de Sales' church, Toledo, O. Miss Waite was formerly a member of the Episcopal church, but has for a number num-ber of years been contemplating th step which she has now taken. The ceremony, which took place in the clvpel of the Ursuline convent, was witnessed by a number of the friends of the young lady, who is a member of one of Toledo's oldest and most prominent prom-inent families. She is a daughter of the late Edward T. Waite, and granddaughter grand-daughter of the late Chief Justice Waite. New Hampshire has at last been reached by the civilizing spirit of the age. She has just removed the religious relig-ious test from her constitution. The work of justice was begun in 1876. Until Un-til then no Catholic was legally qualified quali-fied to hold public office in the state. But there still remained the clause: "The legislature may authorize the several sev-eral towns, parishes, bodies corporate, or religious societies within this state to make adequate provision, at their own expense, for the support and maintenance main-tenance of public Protestant teachers of piety, religion and morality." The word "Protestant" has been stricken out, and Catholics are at last on an equality before the law with their fellow fel-low citizens of other creeds. More than 3,000 Catholics attended the recent lecture given by Rev. Father Pardow, S. J., at the Auditorium, Chicago. Chi-cago. The sum of $.5,000 was reaj-ized. reaj-ized. $10,000 of which was donated by the Hon. Bourke Cockran. Christmas eve the Pope directed j Archbishop Constantine to distribute j $10,000 among the poor of Rome. Hon. W. Bourke Cockran will deliver the principal address at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding found-ing of the Hibernian society on next St. Patrick's day in Baltimore. With a view to reach more effectually the East End poor. Father Bernard Vaughn has rented a room in the Commercial Com-mercial Road district, in which he will practically live for some months to come. Twice or thrice a week he will enter the courts and alleys, collecting a congregation by the ringing of a hand bell. A great national pilgrimage is being formed in Germany to visit Rome March 3rd. -4 Most Rev. John MacEvilly, D. D., Archbishop of Tuam, Ireland, is dead, aged 85. He was the author of the only full commentary of the New Testament Tes-tament in English except the Abpoch-alpse, Abpoch-alpse, and his work is universally used as a text-book in Catholic colleges. The- new altars of purest Carrara marble in St. Elizabeth's church. Chicago, Chi-cago, were completed and used for the first time on Christmas day. They are counted among the very grandest in the west. Rev. Edward Hannin, pastor of St. Joseph's church. Toledo, O., for the past forty years, died last Sunday week. He was 76 years old and in April last dedicated a $140,000 church which he himself designed and the building of which he superintended. Cardinal Seraflno Vannutelli has been appointed vice chancellor of the Catholic Cath-olic church in succession to Cardinal Parocchi. who died recently. The haste with which the pope filled the vacant office is much commented upon. Cardinal Car-dinal Vannutelli is now regarded as the probable successor of Pope Leo; as vice chancellor of the church is one of the highest positions in the papacy. The pope will celebrate his silver jubilee ju-bilee Feb. 20, and it is proposed that ach family, parish, diocese and nation observe the day as one of thanksgiving to God for the holy father's long and successful rtign. A golden tiara will be presented to his holiness as an offering of love from all his children. From 1S77 to 1S87 the Catholic missionaries mis-sionaries in Korea had 3.C00 baotisms of adults; last year they had 5,203. In the last twenty-five years the native Christian Chris-tian population has risen from -11,000 to 50,000, and the priests from two to forty, besides eleven native priests. According to the last computation the number of Roman Catholic churches in Siam is sixty-eight. Five of these are in the city of Bangkok and the others are spread throughout the interior. According to report, the Catholic wife of President Diaz of Mexico has at last persuaded him to resign his office. There are in China whole families that have been Catholic these 300 years. From these .faithful Catholic families the church obtains a host of native sisters, without whose help the missionaries would not be able to convert con-vert Chinese women; and from this same source the church gets hundreds of native priests.
