Show Chaplains to Be Majors. A bill will shortly be introduced in both branches of congress providing for the promotion of army chaplains who have seen ten years service, and who have been recommended for' promotion pro-motion by the officers under whom they have served. The bill provides that not more than fifteen chaplains may be promoted to the grade of major, ma-jor, and such promotion must be for merit. Chaplains are the only man in the military service for whom there is no promotion. .It is different in the navy, where chaplains have the rank corre sponding to major, lieutenant colonel and colonel in the army. In the war with Spain and in the Philippines the chaplains experienced the same hardships, hard-ships, and in some instances the same dangers, as other regimental officers. Several other cases were renorted to the war department where the chaplains chap-lains performed distinguished service, for which they were recommended for reward. If the proposed bill should pass, the president will 'have an opportunity oppor-tunity to reward such deserving men. American Herald. |
